Orlando pop-punk band, Hungover have been gaining momentum since the 2016 release of their latest EP, WILT and with their recent signing to Smartpunk Records and a re-release coming this March, they’re not showing any signs of slowing down in 2018. In fact, this year promises to be the band’s biggest yet. With a devoted team behind them and the drive to continue releasing new music (the band has their sights set on a full-length later this year) Hungover is a name you’re going to want to know before they begin to dominate the pop-punk scene.
With the re-release of WILT coming March 30th, Hungover have had some time to reflect on the EP and even add a three new songs, one of which listeners can hear now below.
Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Hungover for any readers who might not be familiar?
We’re a pop punk/pop rock band from Orlando, Florida. We’ll be touring heavily in 2018 and we’re also putting on an EP on Smartpunk Records this year!
The past couple of years have been pretty nuts for you guys, from tours to the release of WILT and now your signing to Smartpunk Records. What have been some of the highlights of the last year or so for you?
We had the opportunity to open for All Time Low towards the end of 2017. We also got some play on BBC Radio in the UK. That was pretty insane. We’re just five guys trying to make our dreams come true and getting the chance to do stuff like that is very humbling.
You just announced that you guys have signed with Smartpunk and will be re-releasing WILT next month. What made Smartpunk the perfect fit for you guys?
What made them a perfect fit for us would definitely be how much they care about our band. Matt Burns (A&R at Smartpunk) became sort of a mentor to us and showed us what it takes to make something of yourself in this industry. He’s even showed up to our practices and critiqued every part of every song until it was absolutely perfect. Couldn’t be more thankful for that! Not to mention they’re based out of Orlando our home town which makes communicating and meetings easier. All around it’s a great group of people who are looking to put out quality music and help out bands.
Since it has been out for a little over a year and you’ve had the time to revisit it quite a bit and play it live, what are some of your favorite things about WILT, looking back?
We grew up with this record. When we were really coming into ourselves as adults and a band, we were also in the process of recording the original five songs. After signing with Smartpunk and getting the chance to add more to the body of work, it really gave us a chance to reflect and see how far we’ve come and where we’re headed.
Do you feel that you accomplished what you set out to do with the EP?
Absolutely. Especially with these new tracks. Record the additional three songs really gave us an opportunity to punctuate the statement that we’re trying to make with this EP.
What do you hope listeners take away from the EP?
The main message/theme of the EP is that sometimes in order to move forward in life, you have to let the past go. We want listeners to know that change can be good and help you grow as a person. Something can be beautiful for a moment, but everything has its time.
When you guys re-release WILT, it’ll be with three new songs, too! What can fans expect from those new tracks?
The three new songs definitely paint a picture of what our band has in mind sonically. There are a lot of big hooks, in your faces guitars, and rhythms you can find yourself moving along to.
I’m sure you guys are looking forward to what’s next, too! What do you have planned for the rest of 2018?
Tour, tour, and more touring! We’re about to head out on our longest tour ever starting this February. Our band is trying to be on the road for as long as possible so that we can get our music into as many ears as possible.
In addition to being on the road, we’ll be writing a full length record throughout the year and couldn’t be more excited to get that moving.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
WILT will be out everywhere you listen to music on March 30th! Follow us on all of our social media to get updates from us and to see when we’re coming to your city!
