After releasing two EPs and playing countless shows and festivals in 2017, one would think that The Unlikely Candidates would want to take some time off to recharge and reflect on an insanely busy year, but the band is showing no signs of slowing down in 2018. With their new single, “Oh My Dear Lord” out now, the band is already itching to start writing again, this time setting their sights on a full-length record, but that’s not all they want to accomplish this year. With goals to hit the road once more, this time maybe even overseas, anything is possible for The Unlikely Candidates.
Listen to “Oh My Dear Lord” and read about the band’s plans for the future below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
You guys had an incredibly busy year last year with the release of not just one but two new EPs, festivals and tour dates throughout the year and more. How is 2018 going to top that?
Last year was a fantastic year for the band, definitely kept us busy. We plan on continuing touring this year, hopefully visiting new cities/countries we’ve never played in. As of right now we are working on writing/recording a full length album that we plan to release possibly later this year. The band also just finished shooting a new music video for “Oh My Dear Lord” a few weeks ago, getting that out to the public eye ASAP.
What were some of your favorite moments of 2017?
We played over a hundred shows last year so it was amazing just traveling all over playing with awesome bands we’d never gone out with like The Fame Riot, Cemetary Suns, Tyrone’s Jacket, and The Dirty Heads. One night in Athens, Georgia The Fame Riot joined us in our set to play a very drunken rowdy version of “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by the Darkness and it was one of the funniest things that I’ve ever seen on a stage. Complete with beer showers and lots of glam rock thrusting. That one will always stick out. On top of that we released two EPs so that was also a big deal for us.
Are there any goals that you want to accomplish before the end of this year?
Would love to play overseas at some point, thats been on the list for a while. But I think the general consensus for the band would be to get our first full length album out before 2018 ends.
You recently released the deluxe version of your Danger To Myself EP, which included your new song, “Oh My Dear Lord.” Can you tell us about the story behind the track? What inspired it?
The song was written during a very reckless directionless time in my life. I channeled that into a song about hitting a kind of rock bottom point and looking back at patterns of excess and destruction that lead there.
With “Oh My Dear Lord” out now and two EPs to top from last year, you mentioned you’re working on new music now, too?
Absolutely. It’s a constant thing for the band, always trying to write the next song. As discussed earlier, we are finishing up mixing older songs and writing new tunes for a full length record. Hopefully we can get that out to you soon!
What would you like to do or experiment with on the next EP or full-length moving forward? What’s something that you haven’t done yet that you’d want to try?
As far as a visual aesthetic, I’ve always wanted to have some type of animation done for a music video. Almost similar to a Gorillaz vibe, just more definitive to our band.
You wrapped up 2017 with tour dates alongside The Dirty Heads – are you itching to get back on the road again now that it has been a few months?
We always have that itch to tour. It seems tough when you’re actually out on the road playing shows, and then we get home and no one knows what to do with themselves for a few weeks. You start getting that feeling that you belong back out on the road. We will be back out pretty soon though, the plan is to start touring again near April.
What can fans expect next from The Unlikely Candidates? What plans do you have for the coming months?
The new music video for “Oh My Dear Lord” should be coming out here in the next few weeks or so, and more shows soon!
