Music is all about reinvention and exploring new sounds, and nobody understands that more than Minneapolis trio, Household. They aren’t a new project by any means, as their newest release, Everything A River Should Be has been four years in the making, but the fresh sound that can be found on the album is certainly something that they haven’t done before. Everything A River Should Be, the band’s Equal Vision Records debut, finds them expanding on their sound with a much more somber and softhearted approach – something that’ll continue to launch their career even further.
With Everything A River Should Be out now, Household are currently out on the road alongside Senses Fail, with tour dates spanning across the U.S. and throughout April. Learn more about Household and their recent release below.
Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Household for anyone who might not be familiar?
Josh Gilbert [vocals]: We’re a regular rock band from Minneapolis, MN. We formed 4 years ago as a heavier project and have been refining our sound into something new ever since our first release.
You ended 2017 by signing to Equal Vision Records and announcing your new album, Everything A River Should Be, which is out now. What made Equal Vision the perfect home for Household?
Equal vision has a legacy of iconic alumni artists. Yet, they have been great at selecting current up’n coming artists since it’s inception. We’re honored to be placed in the queue of great bands.
What goals did you have in mind for Everything A River Should Be when it first started coming together?
We set out to create something totally different from our last release. We wanted to change into something more somber and softhearted, but stay true to ourselves. We noticed great artists around us making killer rock albums and wanted to create something unique within that.
The album really marks a sonic shift for you guys. Was this a conscious effort on your part or just something that happened as you were writing?
It definitely grew out of an unknown goal. We just wanted to land somewhere that could support my vocal change. The new direction is something I should be able to sustain for years to come.
How do you feel you’ve grown as both musicians and in general with the creation and release of Everything A River Should Be?
I think we’ve grown into musicians who hopefully express themselves more accurately in this record. Life will always change, and our perspectives will always be expanding, all we can hope is that we spend time with our music so that it truly portrays the lenses that we see life through.
What would you like listeners to take away from the album?
Human connection/friendship/relationships are complex. At time they can feel so daunting, they seem unworkable. I hope people see the true joys and purpose in taking risks in relationships. Feeling known is something worth fighting for.
You just kicked off tour dates in support of the album alongside Senses Fail. What are you looking forward to the most with these shows?
Big shows! Haha, it’s such an honor to be apart of something this scale. All of the bands have been wonderful and we’re absolutely thankful to Senses for taking us out 🙂
If someone is seeing you live for the first time on this tour, what can they expect?
New jams. We’re playing 6 of the new ones and stoked about it. It’s for fans of regular rock.
Do you have any other big plans or goals for 2018?
We’d like to stay as busy as possible. After working towards this record all we can hope to do is play it in front of friends, family and anyone who’ll listen.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
THANK YOU
