Albuquerque pop-punk band Right On, Kid have grown quite a bit since their formation as an acoustic project three years ago. Following the release of their debut EP, On The Brighter Side Of Things, the five-piece has been hard at work honing in on their own signature sound and two years later, they’re nearly ready to share their sophomore release, Forever Missing Out. Although the new EP came with a few scheduling setbacks and obstacles, it also found the band refining and perfecting their sound more than ever before, and even saw them signing with Manic Kat Records for the new release.
With Forever Missing Out out in May, the rest of 2018 looks incredibly promising for Right On, Kid. Read more about the band and the upcoming EP below, and catch them on tour (dates TBA) this year.
Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Right On, Kid for anyone who might not be familiar?
We are a pop punk band from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we’ve been together about 3 years now. Our group started as an acoustic act and after gaining some popularity in the local music scene we grew into a full 5 piece band. In April of 2016 we released our debut EP “On The Brighter Side Of Things” and toured to support the release throughout the summer that year. In February of this year we signed with NY based Manic Kat Records and are very pumped to start this next chapter in our music career!
You guys are getting ready to release your new EP, Forever Missing Out in May! What are you excited for listeners to hear on this release?
We’re excited for everyone to hear the sound we’ve developed, but also to hear that we haven’t moved from our original roots with thought provoking lyrics and punchy melodies. We worked with David Dominguez initially on making the songs on this album cohesive. We were very excited to have Seth Henderson at Always Be Genius mix our EP, he did a fantastic job! We are just really excited to get our music in front of as many listeners as we can.
How do you feel you’ve grown in the two years between the release of your debut EP and Forever Missing Out?
We’ve matured in our sound and technique and have really come together as a creative entity. We’ve grown more comfortable with each other as song writers resulting in melodies, rhythms and lyrics really complementing each other.
Did you have any major goals in mind when you first started working on Forever Missing Out?
We wanted to get our music out to a broader audience and to out-do ourselves in comparison to our last record. A really big part of what we worked hard on was to write music that is in line with how the pop punk genre is evolving and be relevant and passionate. We wanted our lyrics to be deep and thoughtful. When people hear our tracks we think they will be pleasantly surprised.
Back in January, you released “Clarity” from the EP. What inspired this track?
Clarity is a song about not letting your ego get in the way with your loved ones, written from the prospective of your loved ones and the things they experience when they’re pushed aside for selfish reasons.
Were there any challenges you came across when working on the EP? If so, how did you overcome them?
Sometimes things happen for a reason. We had to record the whole thing twice due to technical issues with the original recordings. While waiting to get back in the studio we had a chance to reflect on what we wanted to accomplish and were able to refine a lot about the songs and make them better. When the album was complete we were planning to self-release in February but signing with Manic Kat pushed the release to May of this year. All in all we think that the challenges and delays with this album really made the music better and opened a lot of doors for us. We learned a lot from recording this EP.
What was the most rewarding thing about writing and recording Forever Missing Out?
The most rewarding thing was watching our band grow right in front of us, into something we didn’t initially realize it could be.
With the EP out in May, can fans expect to hear some more new music soon?
We’re currently working on a lot of exciting new things. We’ve already started the writing process for the next release. We are planning to get back into the studio this winter to record the next album.
Do you have any plans to hit the road soon? Any upcoming shows?
We have a couple early April shows in Texas and are working on East Coast dates for May. We’ll be hitting the road hard in July, August and September touring throughout the Southwest, West Coast and Mid West. We are really looking forward to meeting as many people as we can and create relationships with our fans.
Do you have any other big plans for 2018?
Releasing this EP and following it up with a lot of tour support is our main focus for the rest of the year.
