Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Young Thieves for any readers who might not be familiar? How did you guys meet and begin writing music together?
We are an electro-indie/pop four-piece from New York City, consisting of four band mates, myself, Alexandra Amor (vocals/songwriting), Dmitry Libman (guitar/keyboards/production), Andrew Lynch (guitar/keyboards) and Johnny Coryn (drums).
We met about a year ago through our (now) manager Mark Woodbride. Andrew, Johnny and Dima were in a previous Rock Band rebranding to what now is known as Young Thieves. Alexandra was going through a musical transition as well, and Mark set up a session for us in Philadelphia to see if we vibed…. it was love at first Demo.
Do you feel that the music scene in New York as affected or influenced you or the kind of music you’re writing at the moment?
None of us in the band were actually born and raised in New York city which is awesome because we have musical influences from all walks of life.
You guys released your debut single, “What You Want” last month! It being some of the first music that many people would hear from you, what did you want to accomplish with the track? What sort of first impression would you want to make?
Indeed we did, we wanted to have a song out to
A. begin building our social platforms, which may I add is going extremely well.
B. When we’re out and about and someone asks, where can I hear your music we are officially able to say SPOTIFY ‘Young Thieves’ What you want…. it’s hard to claim you are a band without a product, you know?
As far as impression goes… We wanted to release a fun track that is easy to listen to… I believe we accomplished this.
What inspired the story that you tell in “What You Want?”
We created a song that isn’t your typical ‘Cinderella story’, which I believe is so important to instill in our youth today. Society teaches gender roles out the womb with toys, slogans on clothing, movies etc. It’s inevitable for little girls to be placed into a certain role with society standard marketing– beyond this Love is Love. In the song i’m chasing after a boy who is telling me to chill, and in the music video we have a lead female who I’m chasing after. I want to be an advocate in the LGBT community, because I truly believe LOVE IS LOVE. To all my ladies out there, go after what you want in life and create your own set of standards as to how you attack your goals, love and personal life – never let society box in your potential.
“What You Want” was also accompanied by a retro, vibrant music video! Where did the concept for the video come from?
Ian Fursa directed this beautiful piece of work. The lighting came from a Black Mirror Episode, San Junipero.
With “What You Want” out now, can fans expect to hear some more new music soon?
Hell ya, follow our socials in order to be updated. Our EP is going to be insane, followed by a dope tour. TBA!

What would you like to accomplish with your new music? What would you like listeners to take away from it?
Traction and Touring!
Music for me growing up WAS my therapy. Every listener has a different story and will connect in their unique way. Bottom line, I want my listeners to connect, a type of nostalgia as it was for me writing it. Knowing they aren’t alone. Creating a community through our music. That is why I started creating, and why I will continue.
Do you have any other big plans or goals for 2018?
For consistency purposes 😉 TOURING, I want to tour, perform and meet every person who has supported us so far/ will start supporting. Creating that Young Thieves Community.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
You all rock thank you for interviewing us, also PLUG PLUG – Check us out on Spotify ‘Young Thieves’ – What you want
