Rome Hero Foxes have been on quite the journey while working on their newest album, 18 Summers. Following their 2016 release, For When You’re Falling Backwards, which caught the attention of Dance Gavin Dance’s Kurt Travis, the band has changed their sound, lineup and even their record label – and they’ve emerged on the other side better than ever. 18 Summers finds the Houston quintet stepping away from their post-hardcore beginnings slightly to a warmer indie-rock sound and embracing new changes.
With 18 Summers out now, Rome Hero Foxes are looking toward the future and are excited to hit the stage with new music. The band has a handful of hometown shows coming up and are eager to hit the road this fall. Until then, get to know a little bit more about them and listen to their new record below!
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about Rome Hero Foxes for any readers who might not be familiar?
We’re a 5 piece indie rock band from Houston, Texas!
You guys just celebrated the release of your new album, 18 Summers. What are you most excited for fans to hear on this release?
We’re excited for everyone to hear everything off this record. I think the singles that we’ve released have really been the heavy hitters for us personally, but there are some other tracks like San Junipero and Break Your Own Bones that we know the fans will eat up.
18 Summers marks a slight change in sound and tone for Rome Hero Foxes. When you first started working on the album, did you know that you wanted it to go in this direction, or did it sort of just happen organically?
It kind of just happened on its own. A lot was going on when we started writing this record. We had a couple of members leave, we left Esque Records, we kind of felt lost and didn’t know where to go musically and as band. Cj had a couple of ideas written and we thought it sounded fresh. We then went to a beach house to write the record and everything after that just fell into place perfectly.
We’ve matured a lot since For When You’re Falling Backwards. We wrote that album when we were in high school. As time progresses so do our playing styles and what we listen to. I think this album represents more of what we enjoy listening to. And it’s way more fun to write and play, too.
What would you like listeners to take away from 18 Summers?
Just have fun with it!
You recently released your new song, “Chest Piece” from the album. Can you tell us about the track? What inspired it?
We took musical inspiration from the track “Sleep Walk” by Santo & Johnny, and then kind of added the punk rock change to it. It sounded good to us when we wrote it, but we were kind of skeptical if people would enjoy such a peaceful and beautiful intro and then a hard hitting punk angst for the rest of the song. It’s one of our favorite tracks hands down.
With 18 Summers out now, do you have any plans to hit the road? Any upcoming shows we should know about?
We have a couple shows here and there in Houston. We’re currently looking for a booking agent right now. We definitely want to tour this fall and most likely will.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2018?
Aside from a couple of shows in Houston, not much. We’re obviously going to keep writing and pumping out ideas and what not. Really we’re just gonna let the album run its course and see where it takes us.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks for having us! Thanks for listening and we hope everyone will enjoy the album as much as we did writing it!
