Unpredictable. Fearless. Wild. It’s impossible to sum up Detroit rockers Wilson with just a few simple words, but those are the first that come to mind when hearing their new album, Tasty Nasty for the first time. The vibrant, dynamic and high energy new release finds the band at their strongest, embracing their wild side more than ever and encouraging fans to party a little harder and live life to the fullest. Marking a sonic shift from their 2015 release, Right To Rise, Wilson had the chance to experiment with their sound and return to their roots on Tasty Nasty and it shows.
With Tasty Nasty out this week, we caught up with Wilson to talk about their lives since Right To Rise, the inspiration behind Tasty Nasty and what the rest of 2018 holds. Check out the band’s retro video game influenced music video for “Dumptruck” and read more below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
The last time we caught up with you guys, you were just getting ready to release your last album, Right To Rise. It’s nuts that it has already been three years since then! What have you guys been up to since then? What has been the highlight of your 2018 so far?
Chad Nicefield [vocals]: Thats right! It’s been a minute or 1,576,800. We’ve been busy maying on our journey making our favorite record to date, Tasty Nasty. Id have to say the biggest moment thus far for us has been seeing the world already start to open up to the real deal fuckery that is our most honest record to date!
Now, you’re about to release your brand new album, Tasty Nasty! What are you excited for fans to hear on this release?
Honestly, I think I speak for the whole when I say our excitement lies within the DNA of this record and its immediate correlation to us as people and the vibe we want to give to the world.
How do you feel you’ve grown as a band in the three year gap between releases?
Major “growth” has happened. I don’t know that we as people aren’t majorly growing on moment by moment basis. If I were to describe the most obvious growth area to happen with us, it would be that part of our spirits that has left caution to the wind and decided to unveil ourselves. The need to explore and uncovering new grounds, to till the soil that we existed in in order to sprout new limbs.
Tasty Nasty definitely finds you guys experimenting with some new sounds and influences. What inspired the musical direction on this album?
We are a products of the 90’s ultimately. Being born in the early and mid 80’s made way for us to really find ourselves in the 90’s as early teens. We started to be musicians then and started to build our personalities and uncover our personal tastes. I think you’ll find us digging back to those early pivotal points in our lives as young explorers on this record and bringing that FUN and energy to the forefront on Tasty Nasty. It’s definitely our brightest example of FUCKERY to date thats for sure!
Lyrically, this album is kind of like Wilson on steroids, too. It’s catchy as hell, funny and hits really hard. What goals did you have when you started working on it? What did you want to accomplish with this one?
We didn’t have a “goal” in mind besides the fact that we wanted to not be afraid to laugh, to find new skin and to do whatever the fuck we wanted to do. And we accomplished that here. No parents, no rules.
You’ve released a few songs from the album so far, most recently “Dumptruck,” which is accompanied by an insane video game inspired music video! Where did the idea for this one come from?
Acid. It came to me while on Acid.
What would you like fans to take away from Tasty Nasty?
I’d love for the old/new fans of WILSON to find themselves in love with rock music again, smiling on a sunny day, wearing bright colors because thats how they feel on the inside. We want people to feel SAFE being silly, being in love, being open to whatever comes your way… We want to bring new fans into that circle that feel that same way. This record, as cheesy as it may sound, is supposed to let you be FREE for 40 minutes. Tasty Nasty was created to let others find that feeling like nothing else matters… Bills can wait, pain can wait but that shot of whiskey with your best-friends or that drive with your loved ones CAN’T.
You guys also just wrapped up some tour dates with Theory Of A Deadman! With the album dropping soon, do you have any plans to hit the road again?
Yep. More on that soon In the meantime, we JUST announced we will be on the 10th annual Shiprocked Cruise!
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2018?
But of course, we’re WILSON!
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add? Words of wisdom?
Yea. They’re pretty simple actually, and although I wish I had said them first, ha, they will always feel like part of my own, “Buy The Ticket. Take The Ride”
