It’s safe to say that The Mowgli’s have been busy this year, and they’re still showing no signs of slowing down. The band kicked off the new year with their single, “Real Good Life,” followed by a run of intimate tour dates in March and most recently, the release of their new EP, I Was Starting To Wonder. The four song release finds The Mowgli’s at their best, exploring a sense of love and nostalgia and creating some of their best music to date.
And even with all of that under their belts in 2018 alone, the band is still looking toward the future. With tour dates kicking off again in November and a drive to keep working on new music throughout the year, it’s safe to say that 2018 is the year of The Mowgli’s.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Earlier this year, we caught up with you guys to talk about your positive new single, “Real Good Life.” Now, you’re celebrating the release of your new EP, I Was Starting To Wonder. What are you most excited for listeners to hear on the EP?
Colin Louis Dieden [vocals/guitar]: I’m proud of how honest these songs are, and I think there are a lot of moments where you can hear that easily in the vocal performance. For example in “Best Of Us’ on the line “just another thing about you that I want to memorize” you can really feel how I feel. This EP is full of stuff like that and as a singer, being able to be emotive and evocative like that is half the job.
Alongside “Real Good Life” and the previously released “Kansas City,” I Was Starting To Wonder features two more new songs! What goals did you have in mind when you were working on these new ones?
“Kansas City” and “Real Good Life” both had this underlying feeling of nostalgia and that was a feeling I really wanted to chase down throughout the rest of the EP. I wanted to explore that feeling inside myself and see where it led me.
I’ve learned that you can’t let anything or anyone derail you or make you feel shaky. This music thing is an inherently emotional game and you just need to keep your head down and let your songs speak for themselves,
What was the most rewarding part about working on the EP?
The reaction from our fans has been absolutely incredible. I’ve heard people saying these are the best Mowgli’s songs yet, and that is an indescribable feeling, considering the amount of work and how much you have to wring yourself dry to be an artist.
What do you hope listeners take away from the EP?
I hope to take them to a similar place to where I was when writing it. This sort of golden feeling- looking back on some of the best love you’ve experienced.
With I Was Starting To Wonder out now, what can fans expect next from The Mowgli’s? Do you have any more big plans or goals in mind for the rest of the year?
Keep writing. Have every song be better than the last.
You’re also getting ready to hit the road again in November! What are you looking forward to at these upcoming shows?
I’m really excited to see the fans react to these new songs live. Never gets old.
