Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might not be familiar?
Umm… I like Boston Terriers? Also, I am a singer, writer, actor person who makes things with my hands and my voice trying to do a decent job of communicating this life’s experience in creative ways.
Last month, you celebrated the release of your empowering new single, “Woman.” Can you tell us about what inspired the song?
In the midst of the media attention on what has been the long standing experience of women trying to live our lives both personally and professionally while dealing with violence, abuse and discrimination… I felt it was necessary to speak about the goodness of women in a strong way. I am glad these awful truths are being exposed in bigger ways, but there is a collective mourning and sadness that comes with the exposure. The song is meant to be a small break from that part. A reminder to feel good and powerful about what you are.
To go along with “Woman” you also launched your app, The Woman Project, which not only celebrates all women, but allows users to donate to Planned Parenthood and various women’s organizations. Where did this idea stem from? What drove you to create this platform and place for people to come together?
I began designing the artwork for the single and was looking at this photo of my face. The first thing I thought was… it should be all of our faces. I can’t represent for everyone. I wish I could somehow see every woman’s face represented here. I quickly imagined an infinite sea of faces, which made me think of instagram… which made me want to try to curate a version of an exhibit that may achieve a better level of diversity and representation amongst women. It was a small creative way to give people a chance to be a part of something without having to be political, spend money or make a big commitment. Maybe even begin a dialogue around our similarities and differences. I wove the non profit organizations into the app because I wanted to further awareness that they exist and that people are trying to create change and they are doing good things… again, reminding us of the power we all have.
I want people to know that they matter and that they can be a part of something… that they are also capable of affecting change if they want to do that.
“Woman” comes from your upcoming EP, Quality Of Life. Can listeners expect to hear any more new music from the EP soon?
YESSSSSS. Like… 6 weeks maybe?
When you first started working on the EP, what goals did you have in mind? What did you want to accomplish with these songs?
I wanted to talk about questions and states of emotion I’ve been wrestling with the past couple years. I realized that all of those for me are really asking the same thing… how do I define quality of life? How does America define that? Where are the 2 in conflict? What am I buying into that I shouldn’t be..and what is truly meaningful.
What are you most excited for fans to hear on Quality Of Life?
Honesty.
With “Woman” out now, do you have any other big plans coming up? Anything listeners can look forward to?
I might yes… what is “big”? That’s a quality of life question… haha. But yes, I’ll be releasing a video soon and beginning to perform the new material… and maybe I’ll find happiness too. That would be BIG.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
