As a lover of music, sometimes it becomes easy to forget that many songs come from an incredibly personal, vulnerable and insecure place for many artists. For Elijah Noll, that reality was glaring when he first began working on his latest single, “Poison,” but nearly three months after its release, he certainly seems a bit more confident and comfortable in his own skin. The track, which can be heard now below, is something that Noll has been sitting on for a while now, waiting for a “perfect” time to release it – and it was well worth the wait.
With “Poison” out now, Noll is taking his own advice and rolling with the punches a bit more, not letting fear get in the way, and hopes to release more new music soon. Until then, listen to “Poison” and read a little bit more about the track below!
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might not be familiar?
I’m an Alt pop artist from Portland, Maine. Now based in Los Angeles. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, guitar being my primary instrument.
You just recently released your new single, “Poison” last month! What inspired this track?
The song is about feeling like you’re losing control to external forces. At the time that I wrote it, I was partying a lot and experiencing love and happiness in short but brilliant bursts.
It being the first new track you’ve released in a while, was there anything that you wanted to accomplish with “Poison”?
I wrote the song a while back and have held on to it for a long time. I put out a previous version when I first wrote it, but later took it down. I think I was afraid to let it go because I didn’t believe I would write a better song and I wanted the timing to be “perfect”. That was stupid.
When I came out to LA I was working with my friend Kenny Carkeet. I felt his production style would compliment Poison, and was really stoked with what he did with it.
What would you like listeners to take away from the track?
It’s normal to feel you’ve lost control of yourself, but in the end you have to take responsibility for what you choose to do and be okay with that, or change.
With “Poison” out now, can fans expect to hear any more new music soon?
Yeah, I’ve been writing a lot over the last year and this time around I’m not letting fear get in the way.
You’re also getting ready to hit the road with The Mowgli’s later this year! What are you looking forward to the most on those upcoming tour dates?
I can’t wait to meet a ton of new people and test some new songs out in a live setting. It’s hard to know how songs will affect people until you see it happen irl. I love performing, maybe even more than writing/recording, so I’m stoked.
If someone is seeing you live for the first time, what can they expect from your live show?
Emotional fireworks. I hope each person has their own unique experience with it!
Do you have any other big goals or plans for 2018?
I really want stay out on the road touring as much as possible. I love being in transit and meeting people and having weird and exciting experiences. We’ll see what’s next.
