Brooklyn rock band The Britanys don’t take themselves too seriously, but they’re definitely serious about creating honest music that resonates with themselves and their listeners. If the music scene in New York has taught them anything, it’s not to care what others think and to write music that matters to them first and foremost. The result is the music that The Britanys have been hard at work on this year, most recently their new single, “Yer Out Of Control.”
With new music out now, and their new mixtape, 1-833-IDK-HTBA (a number that fans can actually call) out on October 5th, The Britanys now have their sights set on the UK, with a run of tour dates coming up overseas this month. Get to know a little more about the band and listen to “Yer Out Off Control” now below!
Can you tell us a little bit about The Britanys for anyone who might not be familiar? What makes you guys tick?
Voice memos, selfies, memes, team sports, almond butter, YouTube holes.
We all live together and built a studio in our basement.
Lucas1 is a graphic design whiz, Lucas2 engineers Brooklyn bands, Jake is an ex YSL model and now Jim Halpert IRL, and Steele is a friendly neighborhood jock who works with rescue dogs!
How do you feel the music scene in New York has shaped you as a band?
People pretend like they don’t give a fuck, made us learn quick that the end goal is not approval.
On the flip side, what would you like to be able to bring to the local scene that it might be lacking?
A unified community of differences inspired by the common good of humanity. That, and sick rock shreds.
You guys have had an exciting year so far filled with shows and new music! What has been the highlight of 2018 so far?
Realizing the now and writing new material to reflect that realization.
You recently released your latest single, “Yer out of Control” as well! Can you tell us a little bit about this track? What inspired it?
Wolves, drama, the realization that people lie to get what they want, either ourselves or others. Liberation.
On top of “Yer out of Control,” you’ve also released a few other songs this year, including “I Don’t Know How to Be Alone.” Do you have any plans to release more music before the year comes to an end? Maybe an EP?
We’re releasing a mixtape on October 5th (Can’t Stop Checking My Phone), and will go back into the studio soon after to keep working
What would you like listeners to take away from the latest songs you’ve been releasing?
Liberty. That the out of control state of mind- it’s okay to live in it rather than deny it, to express it rather than be subdued by it. It’s merely a matter of accepting the scale of human emotion. Run with it.
You also have a handful of shows coming up in the UK! What are you most excited about on this upcoming run?
Playing to people who care about guitar music, and to see the British countryside. For Steele, it’s to stop off in Sheffield on our day off to visit the Stocksbridge Park Steels FC (they have a shared namesake!)
What can fans expect from your upcoming shows if they’ve never seen you live before?
To drop out and enjoy themselves.
Do you have any other big plans for 2018?
We Are Human Residencies starting October 2018 in New York City.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
That is all, thanks!
