Although it has been ten years since singer and actress Emily Jackson was heavily involved in music, she certainly hasn’t lost sight of what she wants. With her new single, “Oh Mother,” Jackson has emerged stronger and more confident than ever. Starting out as a letter to her own mother, “Oh Mother” quickly morphed into a letter of self-realization for Jackson, who is currently campaigning to get the song onto the next season of Game Of Thrones.
With “Oh Mother” out now, Jackson is ready to take the music world by storm once more, with a music video, live shows and even more new music coming before the end of the year! Listen to “Oh Mother” below and read a little bit more about Emily Jackson’s journey now below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for anyone who might be hearing your music for the first time?
I’m a singer songwriter originally from Montclair, NJ who now resides in Brooklyn. I was on a 10 year hiatus from singing and music, and a little over a year ago I started writing and recording songs again and OH MOTHER is the first of that batch.
As both a musician and an actress, do you feel that the two outlets affect one another at all?
They do, even though I’ve tried to keep them separate, but only in good ways. Having the outlet of self expression through my songs has definitely improved my acting. In part because it gave me a new perspective on my art. As an actor it feels sometimes like it’s you against the world because it’s such a competitive job market. Having a creative outlet that I have total control over has definitely relaxed my approach, especially to auditioning, and has made me more confident about who I am and what I have to offer. I feel like acting, theater, and cinema have definitely influenced my sound. I love hearing lyrics that tell a story and sonic arrangements that put you in a fantasy world. That’s what has always moved me so that’s what I’d like to create.
Last month, you celebrated the release of your new single, “Oh Mother.” Can you tell us about the song? What inspired it?
The song began as a letter to my mother, but then morphed into almost a letter to myself. It was me working out all of these things that you come to realize about who you are that maybe your parents never planned for you. But it’s also very much about grappling with the harsh realities of our world that your parents can never teach you.
“Oh Mother” marks your first new music since leaving a major label years ago. How do you feel you’ve grown as an artist since then?
I think, honestly, just growing up and having life experiences has shaped me in a different way. The things I wanted to write about at 17 are actually not so different from what I write about now, but I’ve had time to figure out how I really wanted to say those things. The older you get and the more experience you have in life, the richer your instrument becomes.
Did you have any major goals in mind when you started working on “Oh Mother,” it being one of the first songs that many people may hear from you?
The biggest goal was to get it out! It took a long time and multiple producers. But, crazy as it sounds, when the song started to take shape in production I always imagined it being in one of the Game Of Thrones trailers.
You’ve been campaigning to get “Oh Mother” on the next season of Game Of Thrones. What can fans do to help?
Tag the producers and show on socials! Especially Twitter and Instagram. I really think if enough people did that producers would take notice. And share it with as many people as you can!!
With “Oh Mother” out now, could fans expect to hear more new music soon?
Definitely. I have an EP coming out in the spring and my next single coming out before the end of the year.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2018? Could we expect to see a live show or two soon?
Getting the OH MOTHER video out, and the next single ready for release. And yes I’m hoping to play a couple shows before the year is up.
