A former professional cyclist turned musician, Gavin Haley understands what it means to be passionate about something. While competing with the national cycling team, Haley suffered an injury that resulted in a collapsed lung, setting back his travel by several months, but during this time, his love for music – one that started when he was just a kid – was sparked once more. The result is Haley’s latest music and new single, “Sad Season.” The track, which provides the perfect vibe for just about any setting, lifts spirits and reminds listeners that sadness is temporary.
With “Sad Season” out now, Gavin Haley is currently out on the road alongside Cory Harper and has plans to release more new music before the year comes to an end. Get to know a little bit more about Haley and listen to “Sad Season” now below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for anyone who might not be familiar?
I’m Gavin! 21 years old – I make music that feels good, love positive energy, and eat lots of fruit. Those are the basics haha. Oh and I love riding bikes!
What first inspired you to get involved with music? Do you remember what first sparked your interest in it?
When I was younger my dad tried playing guitar for a while – I used to go into his office and just play the strings for fun. I didn’t even press any notes I just strummed the open strings. The energy it gives you is hard to explain. Later on I picked it up for myself and it just kinda took off from there. I was in a choir at about 12-13 and that’s when I realized I liked singing. I spent most of my free time playing music when I wasn’t racing bikes.
You just released your new single, “Sad Season” earlier this month! What goals did you have in mind when you first started working on this track?
When I’m creating I don’t necessary have goals as much as I just wanna make the best song I can in that moment. It’s about being present and creating something special.
Now that it has been out for a little bit, what are some of your favorite things about the song?
It’s just a fun song to jam to. I feel like anyone can listen to it whether they walking or driving. It fits the vibe for a lot of settings.
What would you like listeners to take away from “Sad Season,” if it’s their first time listening to your music?
The sad season is over. Not to dwell on a bad situation longer than you have to. You deserve more out there. There’s a lot to see and learn.
With “Sad Season” out now, can fans expect to hear any more new music soon?
Yes!
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2018?
I’m starting a West Coast tour with my friend Corey Harper this week! The first show was November 5th in Santa Cruz! You can see all the details in my Instagram (@gavinhaley.) I’ve also got a few more tracks on the way before the year’s out.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Focus on your breathing more. Be present and don’t worry about things too much. Keep the good feeling energy and let the rest come to you.
