In the short time that Australian electronic pop artist, Trove has been active as an artist (having only just launched the project in 2017) he has been hard at work bringing his array of organic and electronic timbres, animated beats and expressive melodies to fans across the world. Just this year alone, Trove has released and been featured in dozens of new songs, performed at his first South By Southwest and even made a guest appearance at EDC. His latest single, and first original song for 2018, “Higher Than The Moon,” touches on the strange and exciting phenomenon of two people continuously and randomly intertwining throughout each other’s lives.
For Trove, the world of music isn’t anything new, either. Although his current project is still new, Trove has been playing music since he was a kid and been involved with countless projects since then. With plenty of experience under his belt, a drive to create music that he directly identifies with and plans to release an EP soon, 2019 promises to be a busy year for Trove. Get to know a little bit more about him and listen to “Higher Than The Moon” below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might be hearing you for the first time?
I am an Australian artist living in LA, I make all kinds of music but my project is centred around alt pop/electronic sounds. I’ve been playing music my whole life and I have an obsession with breakfast.
I know you’ve been playing music since you were young, but when was it that you knew it was something you wanted to pursue as a career?
Pretty early on! My parents bought me a drum kit and a guitar when I was 7 or 8 and it was pretty soon after that that I wanted to be in a band when I grew up and perform live. It became serious just after school when I had started a band and started touring and creating records and found a love for it.
You’ve been involved in various other musical projects, but Trove is a fairly new one, launched just last year. When did you begin to develop the sound you have now?
Yeah! Trove is still a baby. I started creating my own music about 6 months prior to my first release but it’s really only in the last few months that I feel like I’ve found a sound that I identify with. I have an EP coming out early next year and whilst the songs are all different I think (hope) there is consistency within each song in terms of the musicality and style.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned over the years that have helped you along the way with this project?
I feel like I’ve faced failure and rejection 234971835 times in the past 8 years of doing music but I think the most important thing I’ve learned is to embrace it and use it a tool to figure out what is working and what is not. I really think that’s a valuable lesson I have learned not just in music but in life in general. Every time I face a setback or a problem, I try an approach it with a hint of stoicism and figure out how I can view it as an opportunity as opposed to an obstacle and that has really helped me.
You’ve had an incredibly busy year full of new music so far! What has been the highlight of 2018 so far?
It’s been insane… I had a couple dozen releases and features and I am truly enjoying some time off right now! There were a lot of little wins along the way this year. I think performing my first live shows at SXSW and then singing at EDC with my friend Dabin was a highlight too. I love live performance so much and it’s something I’m really doing a lot more of next year!
You just recently released your new single, “Higher Than The Moon.” Can tell us a little bit about this song? What inspired it?
The concept is somewhat about connecting with people throughout the course of your life. I’ve had multiple experiences where I’ve met someone I truly care about in different cities or different walks of life and whilst you can’t always necessarily always drop everything to spend time with another human, they’ve still managed to appear throughout the years reminding me that good people are good people and to really cradle those moments because you’re not sure if or when they will happen again.
With “Higher Than The Moon” out now, can fans expect any more new music soon?
100%. I have the first single from my EP dropping in February and it’s a song I wrote a few years ago. I’m so excited for it to finally come out. You can be sure there will be more original Trove music every few months next year!
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2018 and beginning of 2019?
I do! I am currently taking time off in Australia but in January I fly straight to Sundance Film Festival for a songwriting retreat + some performances, I then fly to Nashville to produce and collaborative EP with a very talented friend of mine which we’ll be announcing soon and then looking to lock in some touring and show plans throughout the country and abroad! I’m also heading to Europe at some point to do a songwriting trip. It’s going to be a busier year than this one I think!
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks for having me and thanks to anyone that bumps this song, it truly means the world to me!
