Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for anyone who might not be familiar?
I’m a singer-songwriter based in Portland, ME. I perform pop-infused rock under the name ‘Janaesound’ (one word).
You first got involved with music at a very young age. What first drew you to it when you were starting out?
My first paying gig happened when I was so young, I just got lucky. By my early teens, I knew I wanted to play rock music. I was a changed person after watching Heart // Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience. Until then, I was singing mostly in church.
How do you feel you’ve evolved as a musician over the years, or even just within the past year?
I’ve learned to trust my instincts a bit more. I’ve learned to plan really far ahead and shoot for the stars while also remaining open adapt as life takes over and paths change. I write everyday, take lessons, and I’m a practicing fool! It is fun competing with myself.
What important lessons have you learned over the years that have helped to shape you into the artist and performer you are today?
Surround yourself with people you can learn from. Be slow to trust but quick to forgive (never forget though). Mind your own journey (and business). All of these lessons keep my heart and mind at peace.
Last year, you released your new singles, “Diamonds” and “Break Me Down.” Can you tell us a little bit about the songs? What inspired them?
“Diamonds” was my first single and I am humbled everyday by the feedback I receive. The rock ballad is about a making the choice to continue forward even with every reason to quit. It’s about perseverance, working on faith, and I was in a dark place when I wrote it. I tend to write about my personal experiences and this song portrays a vulnerable side of myself that I (previously) preferred to keep hidden.
“Break Me Down” is an upbeat revenge song on the surface. “Once im in motion // you cant stop me // you cant slow me down” but I start the song in my lower register, repeating it louder at a higher octave. I tried to convey that moment where you whisper a mantra to yourself over and over until you believe it. Beyond the surface, the song is about refusing to be a victim. People can be cruel, learn from it, and get up again. When you get up, you’re stronger than before and in time, you’re even grateful for the fall.
Can fans expect more new music from you in 2019?
More music, more visuals, more shows across the US.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Releasing my EP and opening for some of my favorite artists.
What would you like fans to take away from your music?
I want my fans to feel invincible and encouraged after they listen to my tunes!
Do you have any big plans for the coming weeks or months? Any shows coming up?
I cannot wait to perform at the legendary Bitter End (NYC) Feb 16th. I’m also super excited to return to the west coast to perform at the BMI Showcase at Hotel Café in March!
