UK singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam French is gearing up for an exciting 2019 with the release of his debut full-length album, The Back Foot and The Rapture on March 8th. The new album follows an incredibly busy 2018, which included the release of his latest EP, You From The Rest and a handful of tour and festival dates. Now, French is teasing fans with more new music, most recently, his latest single, “Keep It Together” which can be heard now below.
For The Back Foot and The Rapture, Adam French pushed himself more than ever before. Rather than becoming complacent or satisfied with where he was at following You From The Rest, French pushed himself to become a better musician, artist and songwriter on his debut full-length, and it shows. Read more about the album and listen to new music now below!
Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for anyone who might not be familiar?
6ft dead, orange tree enthusiast with a passion for writing songs of any kind.
You had a busy year last year with the release of your latest EP, You From The Rest and a handful of tour dates! What was the highlight of your 2018?
I think probably Haldern pop festival in Germany, probably my favourite show of all time. A very special moment.
Now that it has been out for a while, what are some of your favorite things about You From The Rest?
YFTR is one of my favourite songs on my debut album I think, I just enjoyed the recording process a lot, particularly with that song. It’s dark, weird and oddly quite comforting for me.
You’re now getting ready to release your new album, The Back Foot and The Rapture next month! What are you most excited for fans to hear on it?
There’s a song called ‘Coco’ on there, which was a lot of fun to record… that song hasn’t seen the light of day, not even at live shows, so I’ll be interested to hear what people make of it.
How do you feel you’ve grown in the time between You From The Rest and The Back Foot and The Rapture?
I think I’ll always be learning, and I’m constantly wanting to better myself. I think if you ever hit a point where you think you can’t get any better, then inevitably the only way is down… and I’m not up for that. I’m a better musician, artist and songwriter now than I ever have been, and next year I’ll be looking back and seeing how far future me has come from this interview with my past self.
What were some of the most rewarding or exciting moments of working on the album?
I think weightless will always be a huge moment for me, we recorded that live, so its one take of me performing in a studio… something I was so uncomfortable with doing but Rich, my producer pretty much forced me into it and I can’t thank him enough. I’m very proud of that recording.
You also started the year with the release of your latest single, “The Only Living Thing.” Can you tell us a bit about what inspired the song and video?
The song is about learning to only care about the person that means more to you than anyone else in the world, and to avoid external opinion. To help eachother through turmoil, and the video paints that picture by nodding towards mental health and loneliness.
Do you have any other big plans for 2019? Any upcoming shows or tour dates that you’re excited for?
Plenty, once the album is out, we have a UK tour in March and April, then we head straight out to Europe for the rest of April… We’ll then be into festival season from May onwards.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks for having me, if people wanna check out my new podcast ‘A Northern Perspective’ it out now wherever you’d normally listen to podcasts, Spotify, Apple, Youtube etc.
