A lot can change in just one year, and singer, songwriter, and producer Jake Miller is proof of that. Just last March, Miller was celebrating the independent release of his album, Silver Linings and now, just a little over a year later, he is gearing up to release his new EP, BASED ON A TRUE STORY on none other than Sony RED. Not only is the label a new addition, but so are Miller’s outlook on his music and his songwriting abilities, which just seem to keep growing.
Jake Miller kicked off the new year with the release of his new single, “WAIT FOR YOU” and with his latest track, “NIKES” out now, he’s showing no signs of slowing down before the release of BASED ON A TRUE STORY on March 29th! Miller also recently announced his spring headlining “WAIT FOR YOU” Tour that kicks off on April 11 in Las Vegas and will hit 21 cities across the U.S. including major markets in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Nashville. Interview by Dom Vigil
The last time we caught up with you, you were just releasing your latest album, Silver Lining! What have you been up to since then?
Since Silver Lining, I’ve signed to Sony RED and created some of the best music of my life. We released our first single called “Wait For You” which I’m extremely proud of.
What was the highlight of your 2018?
My highlight was putting out Silver Lining and playing it every night on tour.
Most recently, you released your latest single, “Wait For You”! Can you tell us a little bit about the song? What inspired it?
I wanted to make a song that was 80’s inspired. I combined 2019 electronic synths/plucks with 80’s drums and an 80’s driving bass. I love how it feels like multiple songs in one. Lyrically, I wanted to write a song about waiting for someone because I know it’s something a lot of people can relate to. You’ll always wait for someone if you think they’re worth the wait.
“Wait For You” is a taste-test of your new EP, BASED ON A TRUE STORY., out on March 29th. What goals did you have in mind when you first started working on the EP?
I wanted to push myself and try new things and sounds for this project. Musically, it’s a whole new level for me as a producer. And as a songwriter, some of the songs are very vulnerable and emotional, which I think is my favorite type of song to write.
How do you feel you’ve grown between Silver Lining and BASED ON A TRUE STORY.?
I’ve become a much better producer and songwriter. I practice producing every single day, and I can see myself getting better and better everyday.
What would you like fans to take away from the BASED ON A TRUE STORY. EP?
I want people to listen to this EP when they’re alone and can really sit and soak it all in. It’s very nostalgic and emotional, which is for some reason, the most therapeutic theme for me to write about.
What was the most exciting part of the writing and recording process?
I wrote the entirety of BASED ON A TRUE STORY. in my bedroom, but there was a part that was recorded in NJ at Barbershop Studios, where I recorded a choir on the outro of the project. It was the highlight of the creative process for me.
Could fans expect to hear any more new music before the EP drops later this month?
Yes, the 2nd single off the EP called “NIKES” comes out March 15.
Do you have any other big plans for 2019? Tour dates or shows?
I go on the “Wait For You Tour” starting April 11th and I cannot wait to get on the road and play this new EP every night. We’re hitting 21 cities across the U.S. Tickets for the tour are available on my website HERE.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you to everyone who has given me their continued support over the years! The best is yet to come!
