Austin, TX synth-pop duo Moonray want to bring some positivity into your life. The husband and wife duo (Barb and Jonray Higginbotham) have a clear mission when working on their music, most recently their latest single, “Come Away” – to create relatable, uplifting music that shines some light in the darkness. “Come Away,” for instance, was released on their wedding day and is the perfect taste-test of the duo’s stunning and unique sound.
With plans to release their debut album, Digital Moon soon and more new music on the horizon, 2019 has been an incredible year for Moonray, but 2020 only promises to top it. Get to know a little bit more about the duo and listen to “Come Away” now below.
Can you tell us a little bit about Moonray who might not be familiar?
Moonray is a cosmic synth pop duo comprised of Barb and Jonray Higginbotham with a mission of pulling light from darkness. The name and idea originated while camping at Enchanted Rock, laying under the stars. We noticed how the moon carries light from the sun into the dark night. In that moment, we knew Moonray would be the name of our duo.
You’ve released your first few singles this year, most recently “Come Away”. Can you tell us a little bit about the track?
“Come Away” has become our wedding song. The emotions surrounding the writing process, the production process and finally the release are all encompassed in “Come Away.” From its inception as a beat we created in San Francisco to the lyrics we finalized shortly after our engagement, this song was also released on our wedding day.
For many listeners, “Come Away” will be their first impression of Moonray’s music. Is there anything you’d like for people to take away from the track?
Life’s journey is filled with many obstacles and challenges and whether you are the guiding light or someone is your guiding light, you can make it through.
Did you have any major goals in mind when you first started working on “Come Away”?
Our goal was to create something that could reflect love in its purest form and an opportunity for others to connect to it.
“Come Away” is taken from your upcoming debut album, Digital Moon. What are you excited for listeners to hear on the album?
“Come Away” is not part of Digital Moon. We decided to release some other singles prior to our Digital Moon release. As for Digital Moon, the album will take listeners through a journey of riding through dark waves, blissful encounters, and colorful balloons, and will feature guest drummers Johnny Radelat and Joe Travers. Part of the album was tracked at The Village Studios in Los Angeles and in one song Jonray had the amazing honor to play Frank Zappa’s custom Gibson SG.
When can fans expect to hear some more new music?
Very soon! Our next single “No Stranger to Love” will be out soon and following another single/music video directed by Diego Lozano.
Do you have any other big plans for 2019? Any shows or tour dates in the works?
No plans yet, but be on the lookout for 2020.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much for having us and thank you all of you who support music and independent artists. We are very grateful for our community and we wouldn’t be able to do if it wasn’t for all of you beautiful souls 🙂
