Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Adam Masterson is the perfect representation of what a modern rock star should be. His latest single, “Bad Luck Baby” embraces his old school influences while putting a modern pop-driven spin on his sound – something that fans can expect to hear more of soon. Adam, who splits his time between London and New York City with his wife, is gearing up to release a new EP that features special appearances by industry icons and a who’s who of British studio musicians including Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp), Andy Summers (The Police), Mick Scott (The Waterboys) and Omar Hakim. The upcoming EP, Delayed Fuse doesn’t quite have a release date yet, but Adam has plans to release more new music before the year comes to and end.
With “Bad Luck Baby” out now and more new music coming soon, we caught up with Adam to chat about his plans for the rest of 2019 and latest music. Read the full interview below.
You’ve been splitting your time between London and New York – do you feel that has had an effect on the music you’ve been writing lately?
Maybe. Music and songs seem to come from the subconscious. You get a broader idea of yourself the more you move about it certainly helps to set yourself free.
Earlier this year, you released your new single, “Bad Luck Baby.” Can you tell us a little bit about the track?
“Bad Luck Baby” is a catchy pop song with a pumping little back beat. It’s always gone down well live and is a rockin’ band track.
The song comes from your upcoming EP, Delayed Fuse. What are you most excited for fans to hear on the EP?
I’m excited for them to hear it all! I don’t favour one song over another they’re all my babies y’know?
Did you have any major goals in mind when you began working on Delayed Fuse?
To make an album I’m happy with and release it to the world.
The EP is your first release in quite a while – how do you feel you’ve grown as a musician, or even just a person in the past few years?
Well the more you do it the better you get. I’ve grown a lot I think. Found new sides to myself along the way
You collaborated with different musicians on the EP as well. What do you feel they were able to bring to the table?
The musicians I worked with have bought a lot to the table. We set up and played and tracked the music live. There were no rehearsals, so their first impressions is what you hear on the record. It depends on who you work with but the people on this record are the best. A lot of the musicians who played on this are producers and mixing engineers or have written number one records themselves, so each musician is their own encyclopedia of knowledge on how you make a record.
What was the most exciting or rewarding part of the writing and recording process?
Tracking the stuff was very exciting. A peak experience was going back to the East Village in New York where I was living and listening to the tracks walking around at night thinking wow this sounds good. Now I’m just excited to get the music out there
Can fans expect to hear some more new music soon?
I want to release the full record so that should be coming soon
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2019?
I would like to release another single and shoot another video before Christmas. I am also playing a few gigs in New York and London. Berlin November 14th and Lola December 15th in NYC and Dublin Castle December 21st in London.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything you’d like to add?
