To say that LA indie-pop band, Karmic had a busy year would be an understatement. This spring and summer, the band spent 6 months touring Europe playing shows across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherland, playing 70 shows in total, which helped them take their live show to a new level. Following their performances overseas, the group came back home to play a handful of hometown shows and ended the year on a high note with the release of their latest single, “Little Lucille”. With an incredible 2019 behind them and high hopes for 2020 – which will include even more new music and potentially a new album – we caught up with Karmic to reflect on their busy year and plans for the future. Read the full interview below.
Can you tell us a little bit about Karmic for anyone who might not be familiar?
We are an indie-pop band fronted by two female lead singers from Los Angeles. We are an international group with members from Austria, Germany, Scotland, and Chicago.
You guys have had an exciting year with a ton of shows, the release of This Is Karmic in the spring and your latest single, “Little Lucille” out now. What has been the highlight of 2019 for you?
The 6 month Euro tour was definitely the biggest highlight of our year. We played 6 countries, 70 shows and drove 30,000 Kilometers. We also took time off to write new music in a house on a lake in Austria. It was a pretty magical experience and that is where Little Lucille was conceived. The nature there is unreal. It made it easy to create and flow being surrounded by trees and animals.
You spent a lot of time touring overseas this year. Were there any specific places you visited or venues that you played that really stick out in your mind or even influenced the music that you’re working on now?
I think each city had its own special essence that we took in from the people, architecture, food and the local beer. We were inspired by the culture and we could feel how much the people really appreciated our show and music. It was really nice to talk to everyone after each concert and hear their positive responses. Every show ended in a dance party. It was awesome.
Tell us a little bit about “Little Lucille” – what inspired the track?
It was actually inspired by a trip to Mexico that we all took before we went out on tour. A storm came in and the streets started to flood. It ended up being a pretty crazy night.
Did you have any major goals mind when you first started working on “Little Lucille”?
We just wanted it to be a feel-good song with a groove that was definitely gonna make you want to move. The lyrics paint a picture of our experience and hopefully helps transport the listener on our little adventure.
With “Little Lucille” out now, can fans expect to hear any more new music soon?
Yes! We have so much new music and we can’t wait to put it all out into the world. We have a lot in the works and will probably put out our next single at the end of January.
You’ve mentioned before that fashion plays a big role in everything that you do and it’s evident even with your merch. How do you feel that art, fashion, and music all play off of one another in everything that you create?
Fashion always inspires and helps us express ourselves in a visual way. We like to mainly shop vintage because we like to be unique and it’s environmentally friendly. We love collaborating with other artists as well. Our friend, Alexandra Velasco, who is a beautifully talented painter, hand paints our vintage jean jackets for our merch. For our Higher Self and Wisdom Pie videos, we worked with an artist named Rufus Paisley. He heard Wisdom Pie once and created a whole world in his head for us. It was pretty awesome to see it come to life.
With 2019 coming to a close, what can fans expect from Karmic in the future? Do you have any big plans for the new year?
Music, music and more music. We are gonna live in the studio and work on our next album. We will probably be working for the new year or hanging with friends and family.
