When you think of metal music, one of the last places that would come to mind would probably be the country-infested Nashville, Tennessee, but Orthodox are quickly changing that. With their new album, Let It Take Its Course out on February 7th, Orthodox not only ended 2019 on an incredibly high note, but are poised to take the new year by storm. The band has seen many changes, both sonically and within their lineup since their 2017 album, Sounds Of Loss, and they’ve emerged stronger than ever.
We caught up with the band to discuss Let It Take Its Course and their growth over the past three years, as well as plans for the future. Listen to the album’s title track and read the full interview now below.
You guys ended 2019 with a handful of tour dates throughout the fall and winter and the release of your latest single, “Let It Take Its Course”. Looking back on the year, what was the highlight of 2019 for you?
I’d have to say for me personally the highlight would be finishing the new album and being just as happy, if not happier, with the songs after hearing them as many times as I have since we wrote them.
In February, you’ll be releasing your new album, Let It Take Its Course. What are you most excited for fans to hear on it?
This album has a lot of new dynamics that prior to this we’ve never explored, and that to me is very exciting to share. I think that they’ll definitely strike a chord with some people, and some people are going to hate it all the same.
Let It Take Its Course is your first release since 2017’s Sounds Of Loss. How do you feel you’ve grown as musicians since then?
Since that album has come out, the lineup has shifted pretty drastically. So I’d say the biggest growth since 2017 is finding the group of guys we have and establishing the confidence we’ve gotten as a collective. I genuinely feel like this team is a force.
Did you have any major goals in mind when you started working on the album?
Honestly, I just wanted it to feel like progress. Our last album was already such a big jump from anything we’d released prior to it. So the real pressures and goals came from making this feel like a step in a certain direction, as opposed to trying to re-write what had worked before. That alone is scary, because familiarity is often expected throughout heavy bands releases as their discographies grow deeper.
Back in November, you guys released the album’s title track. Can you tell us a little bit about the song? What would you like for listeners to take away from it?
Fun fact: this was actually the first song we completed for the new album. We wrote it back in the summer of 2018, and debuted it on our tour that fall with Spite and Left Behind. Lyrically, it’s a song that is a culmination of the entire album’s running themes. It also plays the role of the final build before the album’s climax. Not to mention the breakdown in the beginning is not only the dumbest but the funniest part I think we’ve ever written!
Next month, you’re also heading out on a run of tour dates throughout February and March. What are you looking forward to the most at these upcoming shows?
These shows are going to be an absolute blast for both the bands and the attendants. We’ve already gotten to tour with I Am twice over the last two years so those guys are some of our closest friends. Also the run we did with Spite back in 2018 was one of the most successful tour we’ve done to date. Throw in the fact that it’s their record release tour, our album comes out on day two of the shows, Varials just dropped “In Darkness”, Unity TX just signed with Pure Noise AND it’s Dealer’s first ever American tour… The weight class of this package is something we’ve never gotten to be a part of before, and I think it’ll be one of the best tours of 2020. Oh, also our bassist Shiloh is running merch for Spite so be sure to tip him well.
If someone is seeing you live for the first time at one of these dates, what can they expect from your live shows?
Genuine intensity, and very little room to breathe.
Can fans expect to hear any more new music before Let It Take Its Course drops next month?
Yes, actually. One of my favorite songs off the album will be dropping in the coming weeks and I’m very excited to see how it is received.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks for giving me a place to speak on the album, and to anyone reading this, thanks for taking a second to care!
