One of the most exciting groups to emerge from Australia’s Gold Coast, Eliza & The Delusionals have been making waves on its native continent since its inception in early 2015 with a sound that has been likened to that of Catfish & The Bottlemen and Alex Lahey. To end 2019, the band began topping charts stateside as well, landing a #1 position at SiriusXM’s defining alternative rock station Alt Nation with their U.S. debut single, “Just Exist,” and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With North American tour dates supporting Silversun Pickups and Beabadoobee fast approaching and more new music on the way, Eliza & The Delusionals are showing no signs of slowing down in 2020, and they just keep getting better and better.
Following the release of “Just Exist” and ahead of their upcoming tour dates, we caught up with the band to talk about their plans for the new year and much more. Read the full interview and listen to “Just Exist” now below.
Can you tell us a little bit about Eliza & the Delusionals for anyone who might be hearing you for the first time
A four-piece indie-alternative rock music with fun live shows from Australia. Everyone in the band is also quite tall, especially Tex.
You guys ended 2019 on a high note with your new single, “Just Exist” landing at #1 on Alt Nation. What was the highlight of the year for you?
We really didn’t expect all of the attention from Alt Nation/the US. It’s really a dream come true. I think the highlight was releasing Just Exist and hearing so many people connect with it, and also announcing our first USA tour.
Can you tell us a little bit about “Just Exist”? What inspired the track?
Just Exist was written about the balance of feeling depressed but also being inspired by those feelings. It’s a really bittersweet feelings that I’m sure a lot of creatives or songwriters can relate to. I’ve always felt that some of my favourite ideas have come from bad times in my life. It’s an interesting balance.
How do you feel you’ve grown as artists since the release of your EP, The Deeper End or even the handful of singles that you released in 2018?
I think we’ve definitely matured as songwriters, and we’ve understood ourselves more as musicians and as a band. We have a bigger picture of the band in our minds, and we feel like every new song is more exciting than the last. Which is a good thing I think.
With “Just Exist” out now, can fans expect to hear any more new music with the start of the new year?
Yes. We can’t say much about it now but we promise you new music very very soon.
You’re also getting ready to embark on a run of US tour dates alongside Silversun Pickups in February! For those that might be seeing you for the first time at one of these shows, what can they expect from your live performances?
I like to think we put on a high energy show. So many of our favourite bands put on such big performances – even if you take away all of the stage production. They’re just amazing performers. We put a lot of work into our live set, so we hope fans will love it as much as we do.
What are you looking forward to the most at these upcoming shows?
It’s so exciting to be touring with Silversun Pickups. That’s huge for me personally, as I’ve been listening to the band since high school. We also get to play iconic dream venues and amazing stages. We just can’t wait.
Do you have any other big plans coming up? What can fans expect next?
We’ve got a lot in the works, which we can’t say much about. But expect more touring and more music!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much! We just can’t wait to come and visit and experience your beautiful country.
