Static Cycle are far from new to the music scene, but this year they are starting a new chapter as a band. After taking a long break to hone in on their musicianship, their vision and most importantly, their creative and immersive live shows, Static Cycle dropped their long-awaited single, “Boxes” at the end of 2019 and just recently released their latest track, “Ringer.” Both songs are accompanied by stunning animated music videos comprised entirely out of hand-made paper, and these clips are just a small glimpse into the world that Static Cycle is slowly introducing excited fans to in 2020. With more new music – and of course, more creative music videos – set to release soon, and an even more exciting live show in the works, it’s safe to say that Static Cycle are back and better than ever.
We recently caught up with the band to talk about their latest singles, upcoming live shows and much more. Read the full interview and watch the video for “Ringer” now below.
Can you tell us a little bit about Static Cycle for anyone who might not be familiar?
Static Cycle is really three intertwined creative outputs. We have our music, which we are deeply connected to and proud of. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and love from fans over our first two singles. Secondly, we have our online, creative storytelling. We have several cinematic art pieces that tell the story of our music in a very different and compelling way. Those online videos parlay into the characters and storylines and experience of our experiential live show, which is the third pillar of our work.
You guys have been hard at work writing new music and recording across many different studios around Nashville, and have released a couple of new songs over the past few months. What are you most excited for fans to hear on your upcoming album?
We have been working relentlessly on a genre-changing, immersive live show over the last five years. We are really excited for fans to experience this new record in conjunction with that show.
You ended 2019 with the release of your single, “Boxes” and kicked off the new year with “Ringer”. I know “Boxes” comes from a very personal and emotional place – what was the writing process like for that song?
I wrote that song by myself on an acoustic guitar after a catastrophic breakup. I penned the lyrics and the music in an emotional evening before bringing the song to the rest of the band. It’ll be a heart-wrenching song to get through when we start to play it live.
Can you tell us a little bit about “Ringer”? What inspired this track?
“Ringer” is the second single of six off the record. This song is an exciting and different sonic departure for us as a band. It’s a bit more pop than we are traditionally comfortable with, but its theme required it of us.
Both “Boxes” and “Ringer” are accompanied by unique music videos, which serve as chapters of a story. What was behind the idea for the videos?
The series of six animated videos are all entirely hand-made out of paper. These videos introduce the characters that will be present in our live show and start to explore the storylines and themes from that show too. It will be exciting for us and our fans to experience the videos come to life on stage.
I assume that, with two chapters out already, you’ll be releasing more of this story soon as well. When can fans expect to hear some more new music?
Our next single, “Wolf”, and its accompanying video come out on March 27!
How do you feel you’ve grown or evolved with the writing of these new songs?
Most artists always proclaim that their latest record is their best work. We think ours truly is, but the thing we’re most proud of is the combination of our music, live show, and unique content. We believe how people experience music and the content artists are capable of creating today is unlike anything in the past. Whether we’re right or wrong, we have a vision for the future of the genre that we are bringing to life.
You’ve also mentioned that you’ve been hard at work on an immersive and creative live show. What can fans expect from any upcoming performances?
The full, immersive live-show experience will debut in the fall. Fans can get an idea of the characters and storylines from our animated music videos. When they experience it live, in person, they can expect to see, hear, feel and even smell something unlike anything they’ve ever experienced. We’ve described our show as a hybrid of Cirque de Soleil, Broadway and a hard rock show, but it’s definitely a show you have to see in person to fully understand.
Do you have any other big plans or goals for 2020? Any shows or tour dates in mind?
2020 is a big year for us. We have four more singles dropping before the record comes out in the fall. Alongside the record release, we will be debuting our immersive, live show.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We love what you guys are doing. Thanks for supporting rock. This genre needs more people like you to keep it alive. I know our fans, and all rock fan around the world, feel the same way and truly appreciate what you guys are doing.
