LA pop artist Holander is someone you won’t soon forget. If her hot pink hair doesn’t immediately stick out in your mind, then it’ll certainly be her unique, self-dubbed “glitter grunge” sound that sets her apart from the pack. Following the release of her Glitter Grunge EP last year, Holander kicked off 2020 with her empowering new single, “Car Crash,” and just last month reminded fans that she’s still here for them with her “The Quarantine Love Song.” Holander wants to remind fans to stand out and be themselves, and her music is the perfect soundtrack to self-love and kicking ass.
We caught up with Holander to talk about “Car Crash,” her plans for the future and more. Read the full interview now below!
Can you tell us a little bit about Holander for anyone who might be hearing you for the first time?
Yo!! I’m Holander and I drink Boy Tears for breakfast, I want you to play my body like a Kick Drum, and I am a Party of One. 😉 I am a glitter grunge pop singer-songwriter from Los Angeles who writes empowering music.
Your music and your image really go hand in hand, and I think the title of your last EP, Glitter Grunge really encompasses it perfectly. What would you want someone’s first impression of you or your music to be?
I want people to be having fun, to let go of their inhibitions. I find that my songs are kind of like the ideal version of myself; fun, wild, free, & confident. I want you to sing along and feel the same way!
What would you like for fans to take away from your music?
I want to be their friend at 2am when no one else is around. I want them to remember that they’re allowed to be different, to be whoever they want to be.
Last month, you released your new single, “Car Crash.” What inspired this track?
I crashed my car! I was distracted because I was devastated by a breakup I was going through. I totaled the car, smashed it into a million pieces. It was really scary. But then something amazing happened; I stopped giving a fuck about that boy. This song is a celebration of life, and focusing on you. It’s about finally being free from shit that might be holding you down.
“Car Crash” is the first single you’ve released since your EP, Glitter Grunge. Did you have any goals in mind when you started working on new music?
I like to keep on a general theme of empowerment. I sometimes find myself situations where I feel powerless— and I use my music to flip the situations and make myself the powerful one. It helps me feel more confident, and I hope it does that for others. With new batch of songs, I started writing what I was feeling/going through. After I had a few songs, I started going through and picking out themes. A big one that stood out was a digital/E-Girl theme. I was mentioning video games, email chains, and being on the computer. So I started writing in that direction more— and ended up with a new EP that I am calling, “Digital Queen.” Hoping to get that out this year!
Reflecting on Glitter Grunge, what are some of your favorite things about the EP?
I love the imagery— I feel like each song has it’s own identity and personality, something very visible. Kick Drum, Boy Tears, Headphones— all things you can picture immediately after reading the title. I feel like I really developed a personality and style with this EP, and I feel like I found my place as an artist. It’s fun, but deep. The lyrics are unique, but the melodies catchy and easily digestible. I’m super proud of it and how it’s been received.
Can fans expect to hear any more new music soon?
Yes! I’m also dropping a totally off-topic surprise collaboration song in a few days called, “The Quarantine Love Song” to uplift people during this crazy time. You heard it here first!
Do you have any other big goals or plans for 2020?
I completed my very first tour with HOLYCHILD in February! Along with that, I have released 4 episodes of my tour diary from it, with the 5th one coming out next Tuesday! I want to tour at least 2-3 more times, and release the new EP! I’m also constantly writing more songs and creating cool visuals for my fans.
