Up-and-coming band of brothers, We The Commas are a product of their surroundings and upbringing. The band, comprised of Cam (17), Jordy (19) and Lenny (23), spent their time growing up surfing, skating and creating music influenced heavily by the laid back beach scene of Southern California. Now, they’re making their debut with their new single, “Sherry“. The perfect soundtrack to the summer and a flawless introduction to the band, “Sherry” kickstarts We The Commas’ career in the music industry and proves that they’re a unique force to be reckoned with.
Listen to “Sherry” and get to know a little bit more about the band below.
The Prelude Press: Can you tell us a little bit about We The Commas for anyone who might not be familiar? How did you begin writing music together?
We The Commas: We are three brothers from San Diego California who grew up in the beach community. We spend a large portion of our time surfing, skating and creating music. Growing up, our parents were constantly playing a wide array of musical genres. We became infatuated with the idea of creating music that would embody all the influences our parents had shown us. In 2008 we started music lessons and began covering our favorite artists which naturally progressed in creating original music together as a band.
How do you feel that growing up in California and your local music scene has affected the kind of music you write?
San Diego, California has a laid back beach scene that has heavily influenced our sound. Our music aims to resemble the chill, yet upbeat vibe of our environment. San Diego does not have a big music scene and we have a hard time finding artists that make music like ours. That being said, we would really like to put our city on the map and be the band that claims San Diego.
What music inspired you guys growing up? How does that compare to what you’ve been inspired by lately?
Growing up with parents who are huge music fans gave us the opportunity to listen to a lot of different types of music, anything from Stevie Wonder to Pearl Jam to Kanye West. We are most inspired by the Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder and the Sergio Mendez album titled “Time Less”. As far as music from today that inspires us, we would say Frank Ocean, Mac Ayres, Solange and Young the Giant really influence us. We really connect with chill R&B music and music that makes you feel like summer.
You guys have been keeping busy during quarantine with your 5 Song Friday stream back in April. If someone is hearing you for the first time, what would you like for them to take away from your music?
We want people to walk away from hearing our songs feeling inspired and like we were speaking directly to their soul. We want people to know that they are not alone. We all have different experiences but live in this world together and we want to help unify people.
You just released your new single, “Sherry” this month! What inspired this track?
We are so excited to make our debut with “Sherry.” The track was inspired by the feeling you get when you find the perfect person for you romantically. When creating the song we wanted to evoke the emotion you feel when you find “the one.”
Did you have any goals in mind when you first started working on “Sherry”?
Our goal was to create a song that would be able to encompass our full vibe as a band so that people could get to know us. We really wanted to make something that people from multiple generations could enjoy so that we could start out by showing people that our music can be enjoyed by everyone.
Can fans expect to hear any more new music soon?
Yes, keep an eye out and those ears open. We are gonna drop some more fire for the fans very soon.
Do you guys have any other big plans or goals for the rest of 2020?
Our goals right now are to finish and release our first EP and first album before the end of the year!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We do think that there is a high possibility that extraterrestrials exist!
