With three new singles – “Bedsheets” “Think Of Me” and “Hold Me” – out this year, up and coming Canadian singer-songwriter Olivia Lunny has allowed three very distinct, contrasting sides of her artistry to shine. Set apart from previous releases for its edgier production, “Hold Me” builds off of the momentum set by “Bedsheets” and “Think Of Me” and proves that Olivia Lunny is an artist to keep an eye on. With an EP planned for the end of this summer, it goes without saying that she is hard at work expanding her sound and creating more new music that pushes her musical boundaries, as well.
With “Hold Me” out now, we caught up with Olivia to talk about the new single, upcoming EP and plans for the future. Listen to the song and read the full interview below.
Prelude Press: You’ve released three new singles, “Bedsheets”, “Think Of Me” and most recently “Hold Me” so far this year. With all three tracks sounding very different from one another, was there anything you really wanted to explore between these songs?
Olivia Lunny: As a young up and coming artist I think it’s important to offer listeners as much range as possible. I hope they experience the different ‘flavors’ of my music. Because I am in the beginning stages of my career, I want to showcase and experiment with these different sides and styles to my artistry.
All three songs showcase a different side of you both musically and emotionally – with your new single, “Hold Me”, what story did you want to tell? What inspired the song?
When I go to write a song I instinctually pick up an acoustic guitar. “Hold Me” however, came to life when I sat down and revisited the piano after quite some time. Often I don’t know what’s weighing on my chest until I write and hear the words that come out. The lyrics for “Hold Me” explore the frustration that comes with actions not lining up with words. This song is about a one sided situation where someone is giving everything (their heart and all) and the other is taking without reciprocation.
Did you have any major goals in mind when you started working on “Hold Me”?
My goal with “Hold Me” was to really stamp it with my sound. This song feels distinct and unique. My goal as an artist is to develop a sound that is recognizable and special, I think “Hold Me” really dives into and supports that.
What would you like for listeners to take away from the song?
I hope listeners can feel the energy and vulnerability this song has to offer. I’ve always gravitated towards music that makes me feel a strong emotion so I hope listeners feel something similar in this song!
Are there any sounds or musical styles that you’d like to explore with future releases?
I think the idea of crossing genres has always been very intriguing to me. I started as a folk singer/songwriter and I’m constantly writing in a way that fits both folk & pop. I’d be curious to merge the two and see what magic comes from that!
With COVID-19 shutting down the touring side of the music industry, how have you been keeping busy these past few months? Did it affect any plans you had lined up?
I’ve been doing lots of fitness live stream workouts and meditations. I also recently discovered my love for making and cooking! I’ve been writing lots too 🙂 Although Covid put touring plans on hold, I think it’s been a necessary time for all of us to reflect and for me in particular to make tons of music.
What are you looking forward to the most once things begin to return to normal?
I’m very excited for concerts to eventually come back. I love attending concerts and of course performing so that’s at the top of my list once things return back to normal! I also really miss some of my family members who live in different cities, I can’t wait to travel and go see them again – hopefully soon!
With three new singles out, have you been working on any more new music?
Yes! lots. I’m constantly writing and getting inspiration for new music throughout the day. I’m also very excited to be releasing an EP at the end of Summer 2020. I can’t wait to share this collection of songs that document the past few years of my experiences.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for chatting! I just want to put all of my love out there in the world right now – we are living through some crazy times. Take care of yourself in whatever way that may be for you. xoxo -liv
