Prelude Press: You had an exciting year of new music in 2021 with “Girlfriend Sucks”, “R U Joking” and “Expensive City” – what was the highlight of the last year for you?
Ravenna Golden: Highlight of the last year was creating my Ms. Genius EP. I’ve been working on these songs for a long time so it’s been exciting to see everything all coming together and creating the EP as a whole and putting it out into the world.
You recently released your new single, “Big Knife” from Ms. Genius. Can you tell us a little bit about the track? What inspired it?
Big Knife was written from a place of being frustrated about where I’ve been romantically over the last several years and turning into a kind of empowerment anthem.
Sonically, “Big Knife” takes a bit of a darker step away from songs like “Expensive City” and “Girlfriend Sucks” – did you have any goals in mind when you started working on the song?
Whenever I make a song there’s not really a set goal in mind. Usually the producer starts making a beat and I let them know if I do or don’t like the sounds, and we keep working at it until it sounds good.
Lyrically, “Big Knife” is a bit more of an introspective track as well. Was there anything in particular you wanted to touch on with it?
I just speak from the heart whatever comes out comes out.
Looking towards any future projects, is there anything that you’d like to accomplish that you maybe haven’t had the chance to try in the past?
More collabs with new artists – I want to keep expanding my horizon and I definitely want to go on tour.
You’ve had the chance to collaborate with a wide array of other artists the past few years – is there anyone that you’d love to work with moving forward? Anyone who is currently inspiring you?
I’ve been listening to alot of mid 2000s music – the Linkin Park and Jay-Z collab – I know that’s not super attainable at the moment but that would be my dream lol
Do you have any other big plans for 2022?
Hoping to have another project by end of year if I can and hopefully some live shows!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
