Singer-songwriter and guitar player Christopher Paul Stelling is known to generate some serious power with just his voice and battered acoustic guitar. No Depression recently wrote of the traveling musician “The energy that this man is able to unleash through his songs and performances is unprecedented. The power and talent he beholds is a rare and beautiful thing.”
On the new performance video for his track “Horse” from the album Labor Against Waste, premiering via Country Weekly, Stelling is filmed performing in his small Brooklyn apartment. This time the usually lone musician is joined by a raucous band of musicians in Keiran Ledwidge (fiddle), Zach Bruce (mandolin), Mike Savino aka Tall Tall Trees (banjo), Mike Harlen (Bass), Jordan Rose (drums), and Julia Christgau (vocals). A seemingly possessed Stelling proceeds to lead the talented crew through an absolutely rollicking version “Horse,” proving himself a skilled and charismatic bandleader on this joyous blast of Basement Tapes style honky-tonk.
“Most of the original band from the album was assembled in less than 24 hours,” Stelling explains. “I emptied all of the contents of my living room (couches, desks, tables, etc.) into the hallway and we set to work. One take was all it took.”
