Hail The Sun surprised fans this week with the announcement that they would be dropping a brand new EP, Secret Wars on November 10th via Equal Vision Records. In celebration of the announcement, the band has unveiled the EP’s lead single “1109” today.
“1109” offers thoughts of conflicted nostalgia towards a house where singer/vocalist, Donovan Melero, once called home. When coupled with the raw emotion and introspective lyrics of the track, the single’s visual accompaniment does a phenomenal job of painting a picture of the sort of questions that still haunt Melero with regards to the life he lived while residing in his former home. You can watch the video now below and preorder Secret Wars ahead of Friday’s official release.
Secret Wars, which comes midway through Hail The Sun’s national tour supporting I the Mighty, is in essence, a more aggressive extension of the band’s previous release, Culture Scars. The initial idea and mission statement for this EP actually took shape while the band was recording Culture Scars, and as Melero points out in the Alternative Press premiere for the “1109” video, is even alluded to in the liner notes for that record. Thematically, on Secret Wars, the band looks to “acknowledge all those battles that are kept behind closed doors. There may always be a force working against us, by our chemistry, or by those who supposedly have the public’s best interest in mind”.
Secret Wars serves as the perfect capstone to the Culture Scars era of the band and will undoubtedly get listeners excited for what’s in store next from Hail The Sun.
