“I hope this doesn’t sound weird…” That was the tentative text Drew Norris sent to Tatum Russo that marked the beginning of what is now electro-pop duo Prep Rally. It came shortly after another local Denver band that Tatum was a part of had disbanded; a group that Drew had actually just auditioned to play guitar for. Luckily, she didn’t think the prospect of working together was too weird, and the two began writing and recording songs in late 2016. It started off with Drew sending Tatum bits and pieces of riffs and progressions he’d written on the piano. Tatum would then write lyrics to these snippets, prompting both to build on them and eventually arrange them into full songs. This eventually led to the duo playing local shows around Denver in 2017, and the release of their first EP “Passing Notes” in early 2018. It’s taken a little while for the band to find its home, stylistically, but they’ve settled into a poppy, electronic vibe that draws from 80s synthpop but quickly diverges into its own, quirky sound. Their music has drawn comparisons to CHVRCHES, Grimes, and Marina and the Diamonds.
