This Friday, Atlanta, GA’s Microwave will release their new full-length, Death Is A Warm Blanket, on Pure Noise Records, and today the band has released album’s gigantic final single “Mirrors” and its accompanying video. Death Is A Warm Blanket finds Microwave taking a daring sonic leap, and “Mirrors” is a standout example of the band’s darker and more aggressive new direction. The song explodes with a stadium-sized riff that’s like nothing else in the band’s catalog, a raging amalgam of ’90s alternative swagger and modern post-hardcore grit, all topped with vocalist/guitarist Nathan Hardy’s undeniable hooks. The musical abandon matches Hardy’s lyrics, an incendiary ode to letting the frustrations of life carry you away and finding happiness in the pandemonium. Stereogum called the track “heavy and knotted” and noted the band’s biting new sound.

Microwave‘s sound isn’t the only thing that’s evolved on Death Is A Warm Blanket. The album finds Hardy documenting the drastic changes in worldview that often come with the harsh realities of adulthood, compounded by unending health problems, financial instability, and the ever-present shadow of today’s tumultuous socio-political climate. The result is an album that finds catharsis in chaos and a strange kind of nihilistic freedom. The anthemic elements of ’90s alternative collide with unbridled post-hardcore aggression and heaviness to create something uniquely exhilarating, honest, angry, apocalyptic, and even fun. Death Is A Warm Blanket might be an album about how the end is near, but it signals an exciting new chapter for Microwave.
Microwave will be touring heavily in support of Death Is A Warm Blanket, starting with Riot Fest this weekend, then heading to the UK and EU, and ending the year with a full US tour. See full itinerary below.
