Grammy-nominated recording artist Mayer Hawthorne has released the official music video for his latest song “The Great Divide.” Keeping in the line with the visual for his previous single “The Game,” the new ‘70s-psychedelic-inspired video for the R&B/soul-infused breakup track, directed by Alexis Spekovic and Pele Kudren, is just one-minute long, out of respect for busy schedules and shortening attention spans. “Be yourself and don’t be afraid to be different,” shares Hawthorne. “I had so much fun making this one!”
“We designed a retro psychedelic set around a trip Mayer took to Disneyland’s It’s A Small World,” adds directors Spekovic and Kudren. “The juxtaposition of Mayer’s galactic tunnel with Christie’s projection scenescape is meant to feel forever connected yet worlds apart.”
“The Great Divide” and “The Game” mark the critically-acclaimed musician’s first taste of new solo music in three years and the first releases via Hawthorne’s newly launched label, Big Bucks. Mayer Hawthorne is a modern-day renaissance man. The prolific Los Angeles-based writer has penned every word of his extensive catalog, including four full-length albums over the past 10 years. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times he’s vulnerable and sincere, but it’s always timeless and soulful. Hawthorne, who began his career by making rap beats and DJing near his Michigan hometown at the height of Detroit hip-hop, also handles the lion’s share of production for his music and is a skilled musician, who’s played nearly every instrument on his acclaimed albums.
In addition to his solo music, Hawthorne is also half of the critically-acclaimed funk duo Tuxedo with Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer Jake One, which released their third studio album, Tuxedo III, this summer.
A true music aficionado and vinyl junkie, Mayer Hawthorne, whose music has racked up over 100 million combined plays on YouTube and Spotify, is not only influenced by the greats of the past in his original music, but continues to showcase his extensive musical knowledge through his DJ sets as well as his own Hawthorne Radio, a monthly playlist series available on his website www.mayerhawthorne.com and SoundCloud, where he has over 5 million followers.
