Grammy-nominated recording artist Mayer Hawthorne has released his new single, “Over,” a R&B/soul track about a breakup that isn’t quite over yet. Hawthorne also dropped the accompanying music video for the song today. Directed by Janell Shirtcliff and filmed in Los Angeles, the visual for “Over” showcases an eclectic cast of characters in a vaudeville-style show. Set at a 1940’s speakeasy, this is a place to let your freak flag fly and live your best life; a safe haven with zero judgement. It’s a visual reminder that no matter what you look like, we are all the same – and there is a “freak” in all of us. Watch the video now below.
“This is my favorite song I’ve written in a long time and I’m so stoked for you to finally hear it,” shares Hawthorne. “When you’re done listening, start it OVER.”
This marks the third new single from Hawthorne this year following recent tracks “The Game” and “The Great Divide.” All songs are available via his newly launched label, Big Bucks. PRESS HERE to watch the official video for “The Game,” inspired by the classic film “The Princess Bride,” and PRESS HERE to watch the ‘70s-psychedelic-inspired video for “The Great Divide,” both of which are only one-minute long out of respect for busy schedules and shortening attention spans. “Over” also includes a one-minute video, which will live exclusively on Mayer’s Instagram; PRESS HERE to view the one-minute version of “Over.”
Mayer Hawthorne is a modern-day renaissance man. The prolific Los Angeles-based writer has penned every word of his extensive catalog, including four full-length albums over the past 10 years. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times he’s vulnerable and sincere, but it’s always timeless and soulful. Hawthorne, who began his career by making rap beats and DJing near his Michigan hometown at the height of Detroit hip-hop, also handles the lion’s share of production for his music and is a skilled musician, who’s played nearly every instrument on his acclaimed albums. In addition to his solo music, Hawthorne is also half of the critically-acclaimed funk duo Tuxedo with Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer Jake One, which released their third studio album, Tuxedo III, this summer.
A true music aficionado and vinyl junkie, Mayer Hawthorne, whose music has racked up over hundreds of millions of plays on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music, is not only influenced by the greats of the past in his original music, but continues to showcase his extensive musical knowledge through his DJ sets as well as his own Hawthorne Radio, a monthly “radio hour” in podcast form available on his website www.mayerhawthorne.com and SoundCloud, where he has over 5 million followers.
