MishCatt – alter ego of Michelle González – is the sultry voice from Costa Rica who grew up singing, playing guitar and piano, and using music as a sanctuary for expression and sonic exploration. Now based in Los Angeles, the singer-songwriter and multi-talented artist is back with her newest offering “Blue Blood,” the first single to be drop off her forthcoming EP The Real Pavo.
Recorded in Sweden in collaboration with producer Miike Snow‘s Pontus Winnberg (who co-wrote for Britney Spears e.g. “Toxic” and “Piece of Me” as well as Sky Ferreira‘s “One” and Kylie Minogue‘s “Speakerphone” and “Cherry” Bomb” to name a few), the song has a dreamy, space pop groove which marries up with EP’s striking blend of psychedelic sounds and synth-pop soul. Both remind us how important it is to re-discover your true colors and never be afraid to embrace them. Earmilk calls the visual “comforting in the chaos of it all” while praising MishCatt on her ability to “create singular soundscapes that move freely with unbound emotion.”
MishCatt says of the single: “‘Blue Blood’ is about remembering an affair you had one summer, but with the blue melancholy, cold tones of fall. It’s about an adventure, feeling very connected to a person you just met, a true authentic connection, mixed with the sadness that you may never have that feeling again.” On the video, she adds: “We wanted to make a trippy video that characterized more dreamy qualities, something that was abstract to represent these feelings. My eyes are shot in the whole video ’cause it’s all supposed to be a fantasy. We were required to drink all night to stay warm while filming… you know… Swedish summers.”
Born with synesthesia – a perceptual condition of mixed senses – MishCatt credits her condition for her unique take on music allowing her to see colors and shapes in each track she writes. In “Blue Blood” for example, she said: “I see a lot of pastel colors… Imagine the world of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.”
The new release comes three years after MishCatt’s debut EP Highlighter, which allowed her to introduce fans to her sonic world of vivid sound and texture. MishCatt traveled to Sweden to collaborate with Pontus Winnberg on her debut EP Highlighter as well. The 7-track EP, including “Another Dimension” (All Things Go, MILK, NYLON) and “Gun to the Head,” amassed over 50 million collective streams and made MishCatt the most streamed artist in Costa Rica ever.
