Shreya Preeti is starting off the new year by releasing her Prince-inspired single “Upside Down.” This rising pop artist made her musical debut in Spring 2017 with her five-track Pop/R&B EP, Entrance. Since then, the Los Angeles transplant is more than just a fresh face in the pop music scene. Known for her powerhouse alto vocals and both intimate and relatable lyrics, “Upside Down” is just the start of many releases Shreya plans to share with her listeners in 2020.
“‘Upside Down’ is a feel-good, head-bopping song that is supposed to make you feel like it’s okay to miss the person you love and want the most, no matter how much time you might already spend with them. It’s all about being deeply connected with someone and feeling like you can’t get enough of them.” – Shreya Preeti
“Upside Down” is Preeti’s fifth single release over the last ten months, and it’s perfect for fans of adult contemporary artists like Sara Bareilles and Natasha Bedingfield. Inspired by Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” and Dua Lipa’s “IDGAF,” and produced by Dex Barstad, Preeti’s boyfriend, they wanted to create a song with a modern sound that also showcased just as much funk and vocal ease. The track has a bright melody with an up-tempo beat, combined with Preeti’s sultry vocals and sweet lyrics.
From paying homage to her South Indian roots by learning classical Carnatic music as a child to singing Pop music in a cappella while in college, Shreya Preeti has never shied away from her vocal abilities. Preeti shows she is unafraid to step outside of the confines of mainstream Pop music through her releases, which range from a true showcase of her vocals on a cover of Lenny Kravitz, “Lady,” to an 80’s inspired “Think I’d Like To Be You,” where Preeti shares her true feelings about comparison and competition. Drawing equal influence from classic Pop legends like Prince, Diana Ross, and Chaka Khan, to current Pop dominators like Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande, Preeti successfully presents music that may not be bubblegum Pop, but consistently tastes just as sweet.
