“This record means a lot to me because I’m talking about materialistic habits,” says Maya B. “I believe how you carry yourself and who you surround yourself with is way more important that what you carry or who you’re wearing.”
“Saint and I met each other in Jamaica about 2 1/2 years ago,” Maya B says about working with Brooklyn-rapper of Guyanese descent. “It was before I was signed, before I had anything going on. I played him Selenas before it was out – he played me a couple records before they were out. Then life took its course. But when I wrote ‘Sink’ a couple months ago, he was the first and only artist that crossed my mind.”
Maya B also announces her debut EP on Capitol Records will be dropping in the Spring. After touring North America with Summer Walker and Mabel, she dug in to writing. Also coming up her song Selenas -which Maya B wrote and produced 100%- will be featured on the movie soundtrack for “Promising Young Woman” Out April 17, which is fitting since Maya B is so much about female-empowerment, and the film was created entirely by women.
The Los Angeles-based experimental artist began writing music at the age of 7 and has excelled ever since, often bringing conflicting ideas together with originality and authenticity. Adding another dimension to her passion for sound, art and words, Maya B produced her own zine. The D.I.Y. publication on oversized newsprint spotlights her gorgeously subversive art: Her Pain / Her Brain. VIEW HERE.
And yes, Maya B did actually dye her hair in the sink when filming this video.
