“‘Miami‘ is one of the first songs I ever wrote, and the reactions gave me the confidence to keep going and actually pursue music for real,” genre-jumping indie artist Julia Bhatt tells FLOOD who premiered the tropic-pop observation of her hometown in Florida.
“People in Miami tend to be in a hurry, often easily inconvenienced, but the scenery is so calming and beautiful,” she explains. “The juxtaposition of the soft background and the harsh inhabitants is just interesting to me. Of course, there are many people who are super chill, but you know, this song isn’t about them.”
“Miami
Colored Lights Out On The Balcony
Surely Hotter Than It Needs To Be
Streamers Flying From The Old A/C”
Working with producer and mentor Elliot Jacobson (Elle King, Ingrid Michaelson, Verite) on the track, Julia says they were influenced by a dynamic range of artists who allowed them the flexibility play around and be really creative with the sounds.
“Miami” rides on the heels of her previous singles “I’m Cool” (which Earmilk declares “heart-thumping”), “Marco” and beloved debut single “Tall.” Lavishing sparking acclaim for her previous singles, the media has garnished Julia with heaps of praise, signaling her as a buzzworthy artist to keep an eye on. Aupium says that she takes “indie pop to avant-garde heights.” pInkwifi calls her voice “so refreshing.” All Ages Zine says, “There’s no classifying her music and to say she is only a pop artist is a tremendous disservice to her.”
Julia turned 18 in January, graduated high school at the end of February, and earlier this month, announced her first ever tour (acting as support on select dates of Mutlu’s The Good Trouble Tour). These tour dates will have her playing shows in Texas and Georgia for the first time as well as hitting two stops in her home state of Florida. Details may change depending on necessary precautions surrounding the ongoing pandemic.
