Hundredth stayed busy last year with their 2019 singles series that further demonstrated the band’s fearless sonic evolution. Now the ever-changing band have returned with a dreamy cover of The Postal Service’s 2003 classic, “Sleeping In.” Hundredth‘s take on the song keeps its electronic foundation while adding a layer of shimmering synth pop gloss and one of frontman Chadwick Johnson’s strongest vocal performances to date.
Johnson explained the cover saying, “While we have been working on the next Hundredth LP, I’ve been revisiting the Postal Service album a lot. It’s such an important album for me and was probably the first album I actually got obsessed with. I get this specific feeling listening to it that I don’t get with anything else. We wanted to throw our own spin on one of our favorite songs so Alex and I have been sending sessions back and forth over the past couple days of the quarantine. I feel like it’s pretty applicable to a lot of our situations at the moment and wanted to share. Enjoy.”
Hundredth‘s sound has grown leaps and bounds over the past few years, from their origins in aggressive music to their bold turn into vibrant shoegaze on 2017’s critically acclaimed RARE, to the effervescent guitar pop of their 2019 singles. Their recent work manages to effortlessly conjure the grandeur of classic post-punk and new wave (New Order, The Cure, The Chameleons) and the atmosphere of modern synth-pop and dream-pop (Future Islands, Beach House), and leaves the door wide open for the band to follow their adventurous spirit wherever it takes them next. Stay tuned for more new music from Hundredth in 2020.
