VARI synthesizes an eerie and ethereal debut single on Gud Vibrations with his latest track, “Anodize.”
As a relative newcomer to the bass scene, the Oklahoma-based producer known as VARI is off to a strong start with the second official single of his career finding a home on NGHTMRE and SLANDER’s lauded Gud Vibrations label. His offering takes on a very fitting title, “Anodize,” which refers to the process in which the outer surfaces of metals are chemically altered to become more resistant to corrosion by introducing a combination of acidity and electric charges. This harsh process is captured exceptionally across the track’s three-and-a-half-minute run, as he takes the airy cinematic intro and then creates a violent chemical reaction made from pulsating bottom-end, churning synth phrases, thudding percussive hits, metallic textures, and the perfect balance between light and dark elements.
“Releasing on Gud Vibrations has basically been my dream in music since the start,” says VARI. “Both NGHTMRE and Slander have been such huge inspirations for me throughout my career, and the roster of artists that have released on Gud Vibrations include some of my favorite artists and people in music. ‘Anodize’ is a track I had been sitting on for quite a while trying to find the best way to put it out, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than Gud Vibrations.”
The new single arrives more than half a year after VARI kicked off the project with a maddening drum & bass debut on Mat Zo’s MAD ZOO imprint. Since then, he’s pumped out a handful of remixes that have garnered support on radio shows such as Illenium’s Phoenix Radio and Gud Vibrations Radio. He has also landed local gigs in his home state, with previous performances at the inaugural Daybreak Festival and the Oklahoma’s Farmer’s Market. While it may still be the early stages in VARI’s career, the fledgling bass producer couldn’t have asked for a better way to start making moves.
