Breaking Irish artist Luz has revealed the new video for her single, “the author“. Directed by Imogen Harrison (The 1975, Liam Gallagher, Sam Fender, Jenny Beth) and My Accomplice in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland, the video is a poignant and powerful portrayal of falling in love with your best friend. The video stars Lola Petticrew (Dating Amber, Wolf, Bump Along the Way) and Maya O’Shea (Normal People) as the two lead characters.
Speaking about the new single, Luz says, “It’s a song about patience and love, regardless of circumstance and hope that fate will one day bring them together.”
Speaking about making the video, Imogen Harrison adds, “Luz and I worked together closely to create a script that told both an LGBTQ+ love story and a universal one. Falling in love with a close friend is a familiar experience for most, particularly when growing up. I wanted to tell a story that inspires people to take the first step into that love… even though the risk may feel scary. This video explores a story of friendship, love and self-acceptance. Lola Petticrew and Maya O’Shea’s performances are truly magical, their characters give us a compassionate insight into themes of uncertain identity, internalised homophobia and teenage boredom.”
By her own admission, the last twelve months have been full of standout moments for the 19-year-old Irish, half Argentinian musician, Luz. Her first three singles, all released this year (“i’m lonely”, “we’ll be fine”, “the author”) have been streamed collectively more than 13 million times across DSPs to date. Luz has received praise and support from some of her favourite musicians, including the likes of Ed Sheeran, Sigrid, Julia Michaels, Lewis Capaldi, Dermot Kennedy and Niall Horan.
During isolation Luz covered Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now on TikTok. Her piano version of this cover has now amassed over 7,700,000 views and led to Dua Lipa reacting to the cover as part of a HouseParty takeover in May, declaring “I love this so much”. Watch the clip here.
Luz will be supporting JP Saxe on his rescheduled European tour dates next year. Further details on that tour are to follow in the coming months.
