Brother-sister experimental-pop duo BETWEEN FRIENDS have released their new single “laurel” alongside an accompanying music video. The track is taken from the duo’s forthcoming cutie EP out June 10th via 10K Projects.
“‘laurel’ is a song we wrote about coping with breakups,” BETWEEN FRIENDS said of the song, “There’s always this strange unspoken energy when 2 people disconnect. This song is about driving down that person’s street and looking back.”
The music video for “laurel” is directed by BETWEEN FRIENDS’ consistent collaborator Kevin Clark (Sir Sly, St. Lucia). “For the ‘laurel’ music video, we teamed up again with Kevin and our team (now nicknamed The AV Club), to make the next episode of ‘cutie tv,’” shared the duo. “Inspired by Wong Kar-wai and Wes Anderson, we wanted to make something that felt surreal but also very minimal. Capturing the feelings of embracing the past in a relationship while also on the road to recovery.”
Regarding the new EP, BETWEEN FRIENDS’ expressed, “Welcome to Cutie TV, our take on modern music television. For our new project we wanted to create something that vacuums you into the new colors of our world inside of between friends. A couple months back we were watching old music videos and stumbled upon MTV’s first ever broadcast. We were instantly transported into a time machine of content and knew right away that we wanted to tie our new project together with visuals that felt like episodes of our own station. cutie, to us, is several new personalities that we have never been able to embrace until now. There’s a confidence and color to them that feels unfamiliar and exciting. Within each song is a new persona and we wanted to translate that via characters in all of the visuals for the project. it’s almost like 90’s Nickelodeon.”
BETWEEN FRIENDS will be supporting Halsey on her “Love And Power” tour on June 8th in Columbia, Maryland. The duo will then play NYC’s Governors Ball Music Festival on June 10th, making it their first ever festival performance.
