Canadian vocalist and hyperpop producer blackwinterwells has released her haunting new track, “gnarlethorne“. Known for her distinct experimental edge and fantasy themes, it’s no surprise we see blackwinterwells pushing against the generally happy and energizing bass music to share something a little more creepy, edgy, and rather uncomfortable. Listen to the track now below.
Of the song, she said, “I’m very trenched in fantasy. i think so much music on earth is just about normal boring earth shit. I like all my music to be about dragons and curses and the apocalypse and swords and magic and ruins and incomprehensible terrors. It’s escapism to me.”
blackwinterwells often diverses into different stylistic threads. With chillstep-leaning songs like “falling up” and “parasomnia” being good examples of her often halftime influenced work. But not many know blackwinterwells actually pulls a lot from dance music, and that she started making electronic music because of dubstep in the first place.
“To me its very full circle, i started making electronic music because of dubstep, never really seemed to find my footing in it, and now im coming back around to it in the wake of the new spirit of experimentation we’re seeing in the genre.”
