Hyperpop artist Glitch Gum has returned with his emotional new song, “Diana” today. Successfully merging electronic music, organic instruments, and a vulnerable topline, the song tells the story of a man who realizes he’s the problem in a failed relationship. The song fits perfectly in the signature Glitch Gum sound, but shows him opening up in a way he hasn’t done before making it one of his most personal, perhaps even relatable, works to date. Listen to it now below.
Speaking on the song, he said, “Musically, the inspiration came from Taking Back Sunday, Glaive, and Moore Kismet. I’ve always been obsessed with combining elements of midwest emo with hyperpop, and this release was the first time I felt like I did that seamlessly. Lyrically, I decided to tackle the issue of self-worth and self-improvement through the lens of a fallen romantic relationship. I also wanted to write a song about a man realizing that he is the problem in the relationship. I thought the vulnerability in all of that was important.”
Glitch Gum has come a long way since he first started to pick up the bass, drums and learned how to produce at the age of only 14. The Nashville-based artist studied music technology, which got him into left-field hyperpop and inspired him to start the Glitch Gum project in 2019. He quickly developed his own unique style, and covered Phoebe Bridgers’ “Kyoto”, which caught the singer’s attention resulting in an official remix for the track. He was featured on CMTN’s viral hit “NEVER MET!” accumulating over 74 million streams on Spotify alone, and collaborated with artists such as Rebecca Black and Kllin’ Void.
