BOY2K has released their club-ready anthem, “Close Friends”, a sexy track which touches on the temptations of tantalizing online flings. The new track challenges the double-entendres of flirty online conversations, oscillating between validation and seduction, and escapism of someone sliding in your DMs. Listen to it now below.
“To us, ‘Close Friends’ embodies the idea of ‘Music For The People’ in its use of world sounds and the hilariously relatable experience of someone sliding into your DM,” reveals Boy Untitled. “It’s fun, it makes you move, and honestly, makes us LOL when we sing it. It feels like a bop you can get down to with your bestie. Just like us when we made it.” Co-written by both Boy Apocalypse and Boy Untitled, “Close Friends” was produced by the former, and inspired by the creative joy and freedom the duo experiences when making music together as close friends and collaborators. “Mark helped me finish writing it, and from there, the lyrics drove the production,” says Boy Apocalypse. “We wanted something fun, almost tropical, to underscore the silly nature of the song, so I used a lot of Caribbean sounds plus some detuned, almost juvenile toy noises.”
Beneath its tongue-in-cheek exterior, “Close Friends” questions whether online flings and interactions actually leave us satisfied, or craving something deeper. Grazing commentary on the cycles of external validation and gated communities of the social media age, the song celebrates the indulgence of these connections.
BOY2K cites SOFI TUKKER as a major influence on their artistry, particularly in their operated DJ sets, and their dynamic as best friends creating music” as the main points of influence. “Their fun and effortless sound is something we really gravitate towards,” Boy Untitled says. Fusing house, techno, nu-disco, and pop music, BOY2K is committed to making people move and think about the world.
This year, the duo was signed by HiFi Labs as part of their artist incubator roster, where HiFi Labs will play a critical role in the development of BOY2K’s music project. As they continue to break boundaries between music and the digital world, BOY2K has also been leveraging Web3 and NFTs, creating a fandom that – like their art – is at once nostalgic and futuristic. With fan communities at the core of their project, the duo released a “Close Friends” demo earlier this year via the Web3 crowd-sourcing platform Tribly, which also granted its holders access to a Twitter-based “Close Friends Community.” Interacting and cooperating with fans to craft the release, such as choosing the release cover via Twitter poll, BOY2K is determined to continue building their digital community in future releases.
