Boundary-pushing, anti-pop artist Groupthink has released their new single, “Gray” today via 10K Projects. The new track finds Groupthink blurring the lines between genres once more, blending garage rock motifs with the energy of some of his inspirations such as Crystal Castles and MGMT. The electrifying new track is part of the upcoming EP, Before the Afters which features their last single, “Miss Carolina” featuring Carlie Hanson.
Speaking on the track, Groupthink says, “We just wanted to make something that goes with everything. And Gray goes with everything. This was the first one we did for the EP, and it was our compass for the sound of rest of the sound of the project. Gray is the first song on the track list; it’s a manifesto of sound and vibe for everything to come after. The inspiration for this one came the long subway ride from uptown to Brooklyn after getting in a huge fight. That and the music in movies when we were kids. Gray is a colorful song, so we called it gray. What are you doing after this?”
Groupthink is an award-winning poet — he earned a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin — and his first EP Guilty Pleasure is a testament to a writer who knows how to take his innermost thoughts and turn them into songs that resonate on a wide scale. Some of his collaborators include Ekkstacy, Polo
Perks, and Kennyhoopla. Last summer, Groupthink released Guilty Pleasure, a project full of colorful, vulnerable songs he’s been releasing over the last few years. The vibrant alt-pop project includes singles “Guilty Pleasure” and “Me and Your Boyfriend” — featuring Groupthink-directed videos — as well as the yearning, emotional track “Sex is a Sport.”
