Toronto born, Los Angeles based artist, Sophie Powers has released her new single, “Nosebleed” today. The rebellious track marks her first release of 2023. The dark new track is driven by Sophie’s powerful vocals, a hammering drumbeat and gritty synth. It arrives alongside a glitchy visualizer, which can be seen now below.
“Music was my outlet during some really dark times,” Sophie said. “If I can be that outlet and help other kids navigate what I went through, that’s all I want as an artist.”
Growing up, Sophie was drawn to strident, powerfully confident pop stars like Lady Gaga and Kesha, who struck down expectations of what it meant to be a “female artist” with little more than their own star power; the first show she ever went to was a Bruce Springsteen concert, an artist unafraid to unpick the social mores of conventional North American society and who made his way to arena stages through wry subversion. Avril Lavigne, Canada’s patron saint of sarcastic, singular weirdos, was also a key influence. So you can understand how Sophie became the artist she is today: She was raised by musicians who valued individuality and, more importantly, pure honesty, above all else.
Sophie Powers has been a force to be reckoned with since convincing her parents to let her drop out of high school and pursue a career in music at 16 years old, while also making her own clothes and becoming a fashion designer in her own right that fit the aesthetic and the direction she was heading with her craft. Within two years of taking that risk, she quickly earned attention for her direct and emotionally charged songs about teen relationships, depression, anxiety, all told through a unique musical blend of hyper pop, dark pop and punk pop.
