Ravenna Golden has partnered with longtime collaborator and hyperpop legend, Dylan Brady of 100 gecs for her new single, “Contest“, out today. The hyped up, swag-laced track is accompanied by a maddening visualizer, made for people who need 30000 visual cues going at once to stay interested. The visualizer has more substance than may be noticed at first glance, it is made up of mostly time lapses and brightly colored videos taken from random sources all over the web. The hook of the song says “it always feels like one big contest, everything’s all so out of context” and so too is the content of the visualizer.
Lyrically, the song speaks about feelings of inferiority, trying to do one’s best without dwelling on what has already happened. Upbeat internet nostalgia core. The song is overwhelmingly catchy and the poetic sadness of the song’s lyrical themes dissolves almost unnoticed into the hyped up production and melodies. The single cover is a collage using a still from the visualizer, all made entirely by Ravenna.
Rav’s latest solo release, On My Own, was much more indiepop and anthemic than her music of late, just to dip toes in variety of sound. She followed it up with an emotional EDM inspired banger called 1×1, with prolific Australian producer ninajirachi, with whom she is playing shows in Los Angeles (Subculture Party 4/29), Sydney (Dark Crystal 5/20) and Melbourne (Dark Crystal 5/26).
