Spanish singer-producer MAVICA has released the music video for her mesmerizing new single, “are you back?” today. A beautiful exploration of contrast, the soaring, electronic-adjacent track juxtaposes euphoric production and MAVICA’s tender vocals with melancholy lyrics about the pain of loving a person who is chronically inconsistent. The track, which finds MAVICA finding closure and moving on, can be heard now below.
MAVICA said of the new single, “I wrote this song after ending a friendship. I was stretching myself, hesitant to let go and pushing the relationship to its limits until it broke. There were many moments of doubt and insecurity leading up to and after the breakup. The fear of loss and abandonment you feel is just as present in a non-romantic breakup. Eventually I accepted fate and learned how to deal with the frustration of seeing the relationship go downhill without being able to save it.”
Defined by the masterful incorporation of vibrant colors and warm light, the accompanying music video depicts MAVICA in the throes of her longing. Both beauty and nostalgia abound in the clip, which is directed by Spanish theatrical and commercial filmmaker Anna Parcerisas (Michael Kors, GUCCI, Coach). In the final sequence MAVICA makes use of her dance background, performing a graceful contemporary routine that exquisitely captures the release of her toxic relationship and her transition into a new future.
In April MAVICA released the atmospheric “you could never do that”. Icy and pristine, the track has a compellingly ‘untouched’ quality; the sonic equivalent of a blanket of fresh snow. Slowly a grounded bass and soothing percussion are added in sweeping layers, building until the track explodes in a mist of shining, crystal sound. The accompanying music video explores MAVICA’s relationship with her body as a female performer. The clip, directed by Irene Calvo, is an exercise in in minimalism and shows MAVICA with a group of women connected in an intricate contemporary dance.
