Canadian alt-rockers, Dizzy have released their yearning new single, “Close,” alongside a new music video today. Vulnerable, bittersweet, and hauntingly beautiful, “Close” viscerally captures the cycle of both comfort and loss that exists when maintaining longterm friendships throughout all of life’s triumphs and complications. The emotional track marks the fourth single from the group’s upcoming album, DIZZY, out August 18th.
Vocalist Katie Munshaw said of the song, “Back in 2019 we were on tour in Eau Claire, Wisconsin when the wheel bearing on our van went kaputz on American Thanksgiving. It was a hard day but the only thing I can really remember about it is laughing in the mechanics waiting room and then finding our way back to a hotel with a bottle of green room whiskey. We’ve been through a lot as a band but we always manage to reconnect on itchy hotel beds between episodes of family guy. Close is about a lot of things but mainly it’s about the comfort Mack, Charlie and Alex bring me.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Toronto artist, Boy Wonder, is both haunting and simple. Katie says,“‘Close’ is a song about trying at something until you realize maybe that thing was never meant for you at all. Love, a new friendship, a career choice, whatever. The video is a meditation on the saying ‘get back on the horse’ and shows me and an older version of myself repeating the same pattern over and over again, expecting a different result.”
There is something powerfully intimate about “Close”, which melds a pure, resonant guitar with a liquid bass and flawlessly subtle percussion. Lead singer Katie Munshaw’s vocal performance is tender and laced with melancholy as she leads her listeners through a poignant sonic landscape. The track simmers and builds before flowing over into the soaring outro. The guitars keen and Katie flexes an effortless falsetto before sweeping into her lower register, harnessing the sentimental nature of the track in her voice. She sings “Always felt we went swingin’ / Destined to miss / Always felt we were lightning / Just waiting, waiting to hit” before “Close” ends abruptly, capturing a feeling of both uncertainty and gentle optimism.
The band has just wrapped a 20-date North American tour supporting Joywave and will continue touring this summer with a slew of headlining and festival dates across the UK, France, and North America.
