North New Jersey’s alternative hip-hop artist and self-proclaimed misfit, Reg Mason has released his striking new single “STÉ” today. The new track finds the eccentric artist addressing his decision between chasing his dreams or chasing love. The innovative production (co-produced by Mason, nothing_neue, and CURT) incorporates experimental, glitchy 8-bitty elements that make listeners feel as if they are at an arcade in the middle of a guitar center, laying the foundation for Mason to serve a rich blend of personal experiences through his unshackled flow. A genre-straddling artist who also happens to come from a hardcore-punk background, Mason makes music for those who are unafraid of defying the status quo, encouraging those to step out of the assembly line and take a chance on their dreams, even if it means leaving lovers behind along the way.
Mason explains, “STÉ is about the internal battle that occurs when you’re with someone who you’re not entirely sure accepts the fundamental part of you that is being an artist. Anyone who has been in the position where they have to choose whether or not they will give up their dreams for a relationship knows this feeling, including myself, and that’s something I’m not willing to compromise.”
New Jersey is the diner capital of the world, and as a proud New Jersyan, it’s no coincidence that Mason chose to shoot the accompanying co-directed lyric video (alongside Chris Andrade of SO-CALLED STUDIOS) at the classic Roselle, NJ hotspot White Rose System diner. The scene captures a tender moment of the initial excitement of a first date; as the two get acquainted, they begin to share more of themselves with each other. However, in the back of his mind, Mason can’t help but to think of the unavoidable crossroads that are quickly approaching. Will this person be someone who can accept me for who I am? It’s poetry in motion, serving as the prologue to “STÉ”.
With Mason’s following expanding with each new release, 2023 is sure to be the year the rising act makes the jump from fan favorite to commanding superstar.
